I have an original copy of window XP which is about 6-7 years old, so my first question is, can i use this?
Assuming there is nothing I wish to save on my laptop, is it just a case of inserting the disk and going through the steps. Do i need do do anything beforehand?

Is it the disk that originally came with the laptop?
If it is then yeah, but it'll probably get raped by the intrawebs as soon as you connect it so it might be an idea to download some anti-malware stuff/service packs etc to a USB drive or something and install those before going online.
If it's a newer laptop and an older version of XP you might find that XP won't detect the hard-drive.
if the drive is SATA, you have to re-compile your own installation, quite easy actually, some nice software do it for you
the only issue is the activation, you will need to call some MS numbers. The bad news is that the numbers to call that will appear on the screen have all expired or are no longer in service, maybe the US one will work. This means that you will have to call the US for 30min and wait for some Indian goons to ask you a few stupid questions. Make sure to lie for everyone of them :)

the OEM version of XP grants you a license only for use on that laptop, not the new one

With all that plus the security implications of connecting an unpatched 7 year old XP to the webs then JJ is probably better off just going to Panthip and getting a new disk with XP SP3 and SATA imho.

first point , if it is xp home toss the disc
if it is xp pro , copy the numbers and then toss the disc
find a copy of xp pro with all the latest service packs and updates on a torrent tracker , d/load it and burn a disc
install , kill the wga sh1t and change the number to your number you own

SATA != PATA != IDE
SATA needs drivers,
WinXP Install disk = SATA drivers missing
WinXP Install disk = no understand USB for additional drivers
WinXP Install disk = understand floppy for additional drivers
Solution: Floppy or re-compile Installation with nLITE
