An MP has called for Glasgow to be officially recognised as the home of Britain's favourite curry, the Chicken Tikka Masala.

The dish is one of the most popular in the UK.

Mohammad Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Central, said he wanted the city to be given EU Protected Designation of Origin status for the curry.

He has tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons calling for other politicians to back his campaign.

It has previously been suggested that the mild curry was created decades ago in a Glaswegian kitchen by Asian immigrants catering to Western palates.

Mr Sarwar claimed the dish owed its origins to the culinary skills of Ali Ahmed Aslam, proprietor of the Shish Mahal restaurant in Park Road in the west end of the city.

He is said to have prepared a sauce using spices soaked in a tin of condensed tomato soup after a customer said his meal was too dry.

Glaswegian twist

The restaurant owner wants the dish to have the same legal protection as other famous Scottish foods like Arbroath smokies.

Mr Sarwar said: "Glasgow's contribution to popular cuisine deserves to be more widely recognised.

"Tikka Masala is perhaps one of the earliest examples of the modern fashion for 'fusion' cuisine.

"Glaswegians loved the flavour of Asian spices but still wanted a bit of gravy on their meat. The Shish Mahal pioneered great Asian food with a Glasgow twist."

He added: "I am very hopeful that the EU will give Chicken Tikka Masala the official stamp of Glasgow origin."

Mr Sarwar's campaign is being backed by Glasgow City Council.

I always thought an English style curry house would do well in Bangkok, it'd have to do delivery and shut at a proper hour though. None of this closed at 10 pm rubbish, it needs to catch the after bar crowd so got to be open until 4-5am.

A proper English style Curry house would do well in Pattaya also mate.

I have been to the all of the English Boozers here trying to find a traditional English curry and it is always a letdown.........not even close.

Something I too would like to know. Ever since Malaysia Auntie closed up shop on Sukh 8 it's been pretty much Pahurat or forget it, and Pahurat is a bit of a pain to get to as far as I'm concerned. The joint that replaced Auntie's has OK food, and the owner is good guy, but it's wildly overpriced IMO.

The only semi-decent one I had was in the Kashmir Restaurant near the gas station on Suk at the corner of Soi 23. But, we did threaten the chef with castration if it wasn't done like a real English curry.

hard to find a bad un,
manchester's rusholme stretch is equallyt as good though
they are pretty much all shit in bangers
balbirs is ok but stupidly expensive

Pahurat is good, but difficult to get to. A place there has an all you can eat veggie buffet for B65. Even the Scots wouldn't complain about prices like that.

There is a place in Banglampu that is a spinoff of a Pahurat joint and isn't too bad, but I can't remember the name- maybe somebody can refresh my memory. The thing is, it wasn't cheap like Pahurat, and when the boss told his his rent it was easy to see why. At any rate, B-pu is also a pain in the ass for me to get to, so I haven't been back.

Marmite I have to take issue....

The Kashmir is shit....oily and it had a rotten greasy after taste. I'd never go there again.

Mrs Balbirs chicken vindaloo is absolutely top notch, spicy, the required sourness with the vinegar, just perfect.

Indus is my particular favourite Indian, if you added Balbirs vindaloo to the menu it'd be perfect.

Pahurat is good value because all the poor Sth Asians in the area, their not aiming for tourists.

There's quite a few places in Pratunam also. One had a 100B special where you small servigs of several dishes along with Japati and rice, think it's closed now.

On the top floor or Emporium they sell take away India, if you go after 8pm it's 40% off. Food is made by Novotel, but still a bit oily.

Had a good curry in Pattaya not long ago.Guy from Bradford owns it.One of the soi's off Soi Buakhao.
I spent all day yesterday making a Gharabi (base gravy) and now just making a Jalfrazi.I am not Indian but I am a chef and I did a stint in an Indian restaurant.The UK taste is all in how you make the base gravy

Just shows how different they can be on different days and how tastes vary.

I still reckon that Indians can't cook decent curries unless they've spent some time in the UK.
