From Stone age- BBC-B to PSP in Laymens Terms

You start to realise just how old you are and how fast the pace of change actually is when you try to "delve" into new technology these days.
In my earlier carrear, we were at the forefront of hi tech electronics.
I remeber when I was about 20, my mother and father bought me a BBC B microcomputer, it cost an arm and a leg those days, 16K memory and a fucking tape recorder for a "hard drive".
Then as I entered a pretty advanced electronics industry at the start of my "real carrer" (rather than washing pans in German hotels) I discovered the real sophisticated shit. H P (I think 6233 or similar) they had a whopping 20Mb Hard drive...640K RAM and ran a special plug in card, in a slot bigger than my arm, pre - anything we have now, they were horrible and ran an "advanced" language of HP BASIC.

Now to my current dilema, I bought my son a PSP 3000, it now seems to have been "cracked" and he is now running "emulated" games, whatever they are.

The games are in an ISO format, does this mean I can run PSP 2 games on this thing? or PS1?... I tried looking on the internet, but to be honest, the kind of people that post on PSP forums seem not really able to adapt to real life!

It's like geeks gone mad!

I am afraid to turn his machine off in case I cannot get it booted up from the "CHICKEN HEN" thing!!

Anyone out there understand the principals behind this and can point me in a direction of a NODDY guide that will leade me through the "geekspeek" and provide some info as to how this is actually working and how to operate it?

Your advice will be greatly appreciated, but will not be rewarded financially!

Anyone also know what these "games" and their format are that run in this mode??

I need re education! Do you think Thailand provides this as a social policy to help induct foreign immigrants? Probably not eh!

If they are .iso or .cso they are most likely native PSP games. An emulator is a piece of software that funnily enough emulates something else, so you can have a GameBoy emulator and run GameBoy games on the PSP. You can get a PS1 emulator so you can run Playstation 1 games on a PSP, no Playstation 2 though.

Ive no idea about ChickenHen as I have custom firmware on my PSP as its one of the 1st generation ones that can run custom firmware. It seems like some sort of workaround/hack/firmware to get homebrew and copied games working on a PSP 3000

Thanks for the link, I will have a look, but you are correct they run in ISO format, and are some kind of "homebrew"...you know, that used to be beer where I came from!

The problem I have, is these "new fangled geek forums" don't even speak English, its all a kind of SMS shorthand like UR = You are....TX = Thanks...you can't even understand what the fuckers are saying...and there methods... Jesus, it jumps from step one to 6 with nothing in between, I even downloaded a supposed guide from youtube, the fucker that made it must have been on CRACK, he couldn't even get the damn camera on the PSP, it was harder to follow that a flight simulator!!

Not a 'games ' person but this thread reminded me of when I got my son a computer .
He had a games programme - some sort of flight simulator- where you could choose your landing place /airport and the aircraft .
Spectacular crashes when you got it wrong .

A 747 on an aircraft carrier was absolutely the best !

iso is an disc image( copy ) file
don't PSP games come on some proprietary disk ?
I would guess the bloke loaded up the memory stick with images.
so you would probably download the iso's from a bittorrent site and copy them to the memory stick

at 50 baht for 6 games , why would you want to fcuk around yourself. ?

just go to PSP - PSP - Cheats, Cheat Codes, Videos, Reviews - GameSpy read some reviews , work out which games you want and go and get the bloke to put them on

IE...Yes the game copies are on an ISO format...the question is..can any ISO format be played on a psp??..I can make ISO files from DVD's????
It is this whole "FORMAT" business that has me stumped! I need to go an read aprevious thread first, but I am in total confusion!

You cant load PS2 games onto a PSP. The PSP games are available from almost any torrent site. ChickenHen seems to be a fairly new thing, I hadnt heard of it until today

an iso is just a software copy of a disk , you can mount DVD isos in a DVDplayer emulator on your PC - I have a couple of virtual DVD players on my system using daemon tools.

It's possible to rip games from UMD copy them into a memory stick and play them from there, Fastloader .7 is one programme, but for the money you might as well get your pirate copies from the Thai bloke and save yourself the hassle.

This is the info I am after! thanks a lot, see, I was under the impression that the UMD could NOT be ripped!

Now I have a starting point... and to be honest, it's not the cost of the games at asll, it is trying to get my head around the technology, and ways around these ridiculous copyright blocks.

I really dare not turn the damn thing off as I cannot remeber how the guy booted into this chicken hen mode, you go to photos on the memory stick, where there are a few photos of some Japanese anime, and about three photos of a fried egg, from what I watched him do, he just scrolled down to the second last egg, and as if by magic it started.

I tried a couple of times at the shop but didn't get the full picture, however my son reckoned he understood, but when we got back home he bacame a little "unsure" so at the moment the bugger is kept in standby mode.

I say, I have seen a bit on the net about chicken hen, but these guys discussing it are on another level...it's real GEEK stuff.

ISO is a file, it's a DVD dump or mini-DVD dump,

it would basically be like your tape dump into a computer file, like in a backup

ISO are convenient to copy and for backup, it's a mirror image of the CD/DVD

You are certainly on the right track!

He removed the UMD disc, then you have to switch of the UMD cache, and the UMD auto start, then he showed me something in the system settings where he had reflashed the firmware to version 5.03.

After that, you had to go into the photo menu and select the memory stick, there are a few of these "hentai" images, followed by three photos of a fried egg, one JPG if I remember, and the second one is a TIFF (which I think is the one he went to to start it up)

There is also another file in there called "SLIM" or something.

He seemed to just let the cursor select the Tiff, and suddenely the screen goes garbled, then it boots into this custom mode. There was another step, and that was in the system settings menu, but if I can get the thing to boot, I reckon I can follow it from there.

I am curious to find out what the games are! Are they PSP games, or PS1 or what? They seem to range from about in size from 450MB -1.2GB) and are ISO files.

I mounted one of the images, and it has 1 file and one directory, the file is UM_DATA.bin and the directory is PSP_GAME, which contains the rest of the data, it contains a folder SYSDIR and USRDIR, it also has four files, 2 x PNG files, a SMF file and a SFO file, if you know what any of this stuff is, I would be grateful.

When he originally set it up, he used a separate (different - his own) battery pack and memory card, so I suspect there is some sort of encoding via these two pieces to prevent hacking.

Fascinating stuff though!

LOL. That brings back memories! First computer I ever came across was that one, in work. As I recall all we ever used it for was playing "Star trek", which was really basic, just black and white, with dots and crosses (IIRC).

Not sure it actually was used for anything work orientated.

As far as the PSP goes, I think I am getting there! I seem to get the gist of what I need to do and have managed to get the CF program understood, I "KNOW" what I hyave to do to boot it up using the TIFF, but I still haven't dared try it in case I can't get it working, there'll hell to pay if it doesn't work!

I even mamanged to download some PSX games and Eventually get them running, however they seem very tempremental as to where you put them on the directory structure!

You learn something new everyday eh! Never a dull moment.

Not, even that structured, the shit I was on about was the "AE - 11- 22- AF- 1D " kind of crap, in fact I think it was not even a 64K probably a 16K machine.

We had to write a program that would subtract 1 from an original number, and keep doing it until it reached "0", that probably wasted 2 weeks of my life... maybe I can sue?

It's so long ago, I can barely remeber, I believe we used Hex in place of the binary (and I think we changed binary into Hex) ... it doesn't bare thinking about! Smart people were starting to use Borland C...not my college!

And the "BLACK WATCH KIT" an LED watch was "THE THING"...it cost about 100 quid, the same today, only a thousand times better and much smaller is virtually free!

I miss waiting 15 minutes for the black and white TV to warm up, I think it should be reintroduced to Thailand, switch it on a minute to eight and one minute to six!

Plus, it is better than a lot of the programs here...even that fading white dot beats the local soaps! (at least it is a peacful 15 minutes, rather than the continual bitch slap screaming fighting drivel that seems ever so popular)
