Local Beers and Headache

Am I the only one suffering from major headache and hangover after drinking a few locally brewed bottled beers ? I don't have the same effect with the draft and the real imports ?

I am starting to suspect something is wrong with the local brewers, time to switch to 100% import even if it means paying a whole extra 40 THB !!!

also, any recommendations for buying at the supermarket the good import brands ? I went to Carrefour and there was quite a selection of them so I took a sample of all of them for tonight.

Any special brand you would recommend ? I like mostly german beers btw, the English ones are for unsophisticated piss head like MtD :)

It's the formaldehyde that is put in local beers that is doing it to your head and it is in damn near all SEA brews.
I like home brew my self and used to make a lot of it, but I don't drink anymore so don't worry about what is in that shit.

They don't like admiting it though. Brewers in China have admitted it recently.

To this day in foreign brewing textbooks and other materials, formaldehyde is still listed as a stabilizer...starting in the 1970s, foreign brewers began to eliminate formaldehyde as an additive during beer production. Entering the 21st century, major domestic breweries also stopped adding formadehyde."

Chang gives the most vile hangovers imaginable. I haven't had a drink in ages but when I do I know drink gin and tonic, the quinine acts as a mossy repelant, so you have good excuse to drink it.

Why about Spy? Does Spy contain formaldehyde too?

The heinken sold in Thailand is significantly stronger than the "English" stuff which was alomst impossible to get drunk on.

San Mig Light is the cleanest beer I've drunk in Thailand. Never had a hangover on it. It's still 5% but without much in the way of that disgusting lager taste.

No, formaldehyde is a cancerogenic preservative used in morgues but banned almost anywhere for use on food-stuff. It does keep the beer 'fresh' while being transported across the country in the tropical heat, it also prevents veges or anything imaginable from decomposing, used more often than one would like to know in asia...

I drink the normal San Mig at home. Don't like the Light as much as it is a bit watery.

When I stopped drinking the San Mig Light in the pub and switched back to Heineken and Tiger I noticed the hangovers were worse.

Used to get headaches after only a couple of singhas. Stopped drinking it and since then no real problems to speak of. In fact it might help if I did get the occasional hangover could act as a breaking mechanism

The preservatives are causing the problems, ( I do not know the exact chemical used) - as little as a couple of bottles can cause heavy headedness, but it isn't a hangover in the classic sense - which is of course caused by volume and strength .

Q) Why would you put preservatives in beer?

A) So that the retailer can extend their shelf life (for an indecently long time) in a hot country without it going off and him losing money.

Solution: with canned and bottled beers, look for a 'sell-by' date. The fact that the can has to be removed from stock also means that it contains a lower amount of preservative. I believe Budweiser have sell-by dates on their cans.

I like Mexican beers. Not Corona. It's shit. Bohemia, Pacifico or Dos Equis are good.

How long have you lived here Butters? Well known that Beer Chang is not 100% beer. More likely cut with that commercial lau khow, better known as diesel. Even though the other popular Thai/Lao beers are fashionably "beer", there's a slight suspiscion that should be waivered.

Fortified! At least. Beer Singha is OK. The only Thai beer that has long been under the direction and production of European beers. Beer Leo and Beer Lao are passible. But Beer Chang is lethal. If you've ever imbibed in Chang as your regular everyday beer, you'll find that it soon becomes destructive to your health. Might as well drink lau khow everyday. Beer Chang has this way about it if you over drink....the feeling of impending vomitting, bad hangovers, rots your gut as that local white brew does. FOK! I use to drink lau dang everyday to be drunk. THAT SHIT!!!! I'm surprised I'm still alive today. I live where foreign beers are not readily available, so I've become comfortable with Singha - real beer. Occasionally, we might make a business run to Khorat, where foreign beers can be found....

Yes, Beer Lao is fine. Actually, amongst Farang residents and travellers as well, Beer Lao gets all the good marks. Tasty, "real" beer, not too expensive....

Someone told that there is/are a place in the Laos/Thai border on the river where you get a Laos guy to cross the river in his boat, buy Lao Beer on your behalf for a consideraion and return with a boat, anyone kow more on this, The savings are said to be good

Stick with the quality products and you will find the hangovers less severe.

I don't like Chang, so it's not an issue for me

those "hangover" have become so bad when I go out whoring, that I am sticking with Ice tea and water soda in the gogos or clubs, make me absolutely scared of drinking

finished all my sample from Carrefour, they were all great, all German import with funny name, and cheap when you think of it, 2 or 3 Euros for a bottle instead of 1 Euro is highly acceptable for the benefit of not drinking preservatives

I wouldn't be surprised in a European has never set foot in the Boon Rawd Brewery, apart from the fact that Leo (also Boon Rawd) is a decent drop when compared with the rest.

Theres a German guy with a smoking hot looking flipper wife that works in the Boon Rawd brewery in Khon Kaen. He was brought here by them as he is one of these "master" brewers or whatever it is they call them.

it's still crap, same shit, different name, they all have that preservative thing apparently. Only the draft seems to be ok, but that's about it. Anything bottled here and you are drinking dangerous chemical. Knowing how Thais think, you know perfectly they don't care about customer satisfaction or the negative effects of such chemical.

I drank only Singha for years when in Thailand. Liked the taste, and considered the foul hang over as "natural". Few years ago I was convinced to have one night on Heineken only. For the first time in years after a night on the piss I didn't feel like total crap the next day. Never touched a drop of singha since. Nasty stuff.

Lots of folks are allergic to Formaldehyde, Chinese also use it to tan leather, so if like an Ex wife did, you buy a nice long leather coat, hang it in a closet and every thing in there ends up stinking and making you sick you will know it is China made and get rid of it.

Perhaps, Chang and Carlsberg did have a relationship. But I find it hard to believe that the Carlsberg people would care to be associated with that rot gut. It is vile. Marms, some of us don't live in the big city where all foreign beers are available and the luxury of variety. We just have to choke down what we have.
