'Thai' and 'initiative' are mutually exclusive words !!
Probably 'Mai pen Lai'.
sâang-săn - create ; invent ; make ; originate ; devise ; formulate!
^ Sorry, I'm with Sabang on this one.
But they have to be told exactly how to create ; invent ; make ; originate ; devise ; and formulate!
I must admit though, they are great at copying music.
It's a bit like going to see the B-52's live, you get what you get on the CD without any passionate diversions or imaginative creative detours as inspired by hard working Filipinos.
I can copy CDs on my laptop, too.
Risking the wrath of our revered Thai basher's, a visit to Isaan might be in order for all of you if you want to see initiative. You will find people who in spite of having virtually no government safety net take personal initiative everyday. Unlike the citizens of the much superior west, without initiative the people of Isaan would starve to death.
Actually, I disagree (a little bit).Quote:

I do agree that there are examples of innovation in parts of Thailand, especially when it comes to finding solutions in a work situation; for example a lack of correct tools to to a specific job.
ho Ho Ho.....great thread Scampy.
Yes, Thais ARE losers aren't they !
What's the Thai word for logic?
Yes, a bit like you with all your threads asking marmite how to use photoshopQuote:

Nort, you know that it means nothing, they can not chew gum and walk at the same time..
Thats the reason that they always stop half way around a street corner if turning, got to be sure that it is what they wanted to do in the first place.
What is Thai for "conceited, ill-mannered jerks who cannot look pass their preconceptions"?
Oh really?
Reading crass statements from clueless falang on boards such as these is usually an entertainment for me but this one certainly takes the biscuit ( excuse the metaphor ) to such a degree that I almost find it as offensive as it is blindingly stupid.
Poor Isaan folk unable to subsidise their income from proceeds of industry denied to them because there are simply bugger all opportunities have to subsist on an unbalanced diet of rice, fermented fish and whichever edible vegetation can be gathered. Occasionally, pork may be available but due to its cheapness this is probably in the form of poorly nutritious sausages. Children from poverty stricken backgrounds inevitably suffer malnutrition to a degree and consequently their development is hindered both physically and intellectually.
Perhaps that's why they are so stupid and lazy?
Any more insights from beer swilling fat farang welded to their barstools of stupidity?
^
Green.
Thegent nails it.
Well I think that Marmite is getting at the theory that tropical countries with year round food supply and live able conditions didn't need initiative as much as people in the cold countries needed. (Or maybe he wasn't?)
But of course Scampy is talking arse as usual anyway.
Who knows, does he know?Quote:

^^ Well am I talking arse?
I have to admit that the above comment from the gent is the most valid thing I have read all week.
My OP did end with a question mark after all, and I wasn't having a go at Thai's but obviously I was nodding toward the common knowledge amongst farangs that they are not the most dynamic or enterprising folk.
Marmite being as glib and as dry as he is is bound to attract negative attention, I only other hand suffer a pop from Lom.
Lom of all people! I thought he was sideline and harmless like Mid, but if Lom is having a pop at me then this must be a valid topic. :)
^^^Rousseau's 'Noble Savage' ?
We take them out of their grass skirts and put them into MuuMuus.
Hawaii for the Hawaiians !
"Thais", without apostrophe, that should be.Quote:

OK, Thais then.
Here's the apostrophe:

You know where you can stick it, don't you.
The kids are getting fatter in Bangkok - dunno about Issan.

So the statement that they are not starving is right.[/quote]
Yes, in the sense that you may have a brain which, on current performance, is probably quite doubtful.
Honestly, what is the point......
The point is that you missed the point.
Tell me Fabian, is being obtuse your hobby?
If you missed the point how does that make me obtuse?
I like the fact most Thai people are crap, it makes the decent ones fine people worth knowing, and two of my best friends of all time are Thai with a 52 year old woman as a strong contender for third.
She's so smart and clued up she even understands how crap her nation are - but most of all she, like me understand the reason for this.
It's because 90% of our species as humans are useless, greedy scumbags wherever we were born in the world.
i would not like to be seen taking sides on this one, and i can not speak for the whole of isaan, but if my village was used as the example, i would have to agree with the beer swilling fat farang welded to his barstool of stupidity.....
i have lived amongst these people, as one of them, poor as one of them, and there are opportunities for every one of them IF THEY ARE PREPARED TO MAKE THE EFFORT!
they deny THEMSELVES the opportunities because they DO NOT WANT THEM.
i know one thai girl in my village, from a poor background, who worked hard at her (free) government provided education, went on to (free) university and achieved a law degree. she was not offered any opportunities that were not available to any of the other worthless wasters in the village, but she made good.....
i can vouch for what marmite said. once walked about 200 metres down the soi i live in, my thai friend gathering an herb here, some leaves, some babanas, five snails, one snake, some insects and an handfull of frogs. add this to the bowl of rice that is always available, and he had a pretty nutritious meal (if not palatable to most farang). this guy CHOOSES to live like this, simply because the alternative (working for a living) is a thought that would never enter his head.
how many thais that i know walk around dripping with gold, have a brand new pickup in the yard, but live like pigs in their shacks, and eat rotten fish with rice?
i agree that at least half the isaan kids are malnourished, but this is mainly due to the ignorance of their parents, who hand out "kanom" whenever the kid squeals for it instead of making him eat his meal first. most of them also believe that an handfull of rice with some rotten fish ia a good wholesome meal.
due to a lack of education? seems the government does it's best to give them free education plus FREE, nutritious COOKED MEALS AND A CARTON OF MILK at school every day, but the education is shunned, resisted at all costs, because they may learn something that contradicts their traditional beliefs.
thai peasants are pretty well off in my part of isaan, not starving, just ignorant, lazy and mostly too drunk to work!
now get off YOUR fukkn barstool and go look for yourself.....
