Planning on planting a few Dragon Fruit trees in the yard. I have done a fair amount of research on the net so have a pretty good idea of what to do. Would appreciate suggestions from those who have experience in growing Dragon Fruit in Thailand. Also, I will be posting my progress/failures as I go along.

Sounds an interesting project Les. I wonder what your rainfall is there? Extreme heat or high rainfall appear to be the killers.

Yes so I gather from what I have read. We are in Roiet the center of Isaan. In the rainy season can get pretty wet but the trick is to keep the root ball from getting waterlogged so will have to make sure drainage is right. Heat not very severe so think this will be OK. Will be planting in area that gets about 5-6 hours of direct sun daily.Quote:

The only problem I see with this plan is that if successful you may actually have to eat some dragon fruit.
Why not plant something that actually tastes good?
Frankly I think the wood will be fine and it looks better. The missus has visions of some huge trees and has been told the wood will rot over time and collapse. Still time to convince her the wood is more pleasing to the eye.;)Quote:

Big beautiful white flowers only once a year in the summer and last only one night. A very very strong smell also. I wonder if it's the same plant. Will post pictures when I'm there this summer.
I'm just not sure about the fascination with dragon fruit. There are many other lovely things that are easy to grow here. But, the dragon fruit is high in fiber, rich in vitamins and a good source of anti-oxidants. So, maybe a great idea!Quote:

For now have only used some small plants we got from the village temple where they have a few huge plants.

Only going to have two dragon fruit trees. Have planted 6 of the smaller variety of mango. Just finished planting two fan palms in the front yard. Problem is I'm useless at figuring out what to put where. Place will look pretty unorganized when it's finished I reckon. But, alas, I'll just struggle along as best I can.:(Quote:

I've got a couple of the red fleshed variety growing in my garden here in Aus, got the first fruit last summer off the oldest one (3 year). I did have a third, but the stem rotted near the base after heavy rain waterlogged the soil.
They are a bit of a conversation piece when people come around to my place, not so well known here !
Sounds like the same (or similar) plant. We've got one on the balcony in a big pot, it gave us a whole two fruit last year (purple ones) they did taste good though :PQuote:

In the Chantaburi area (south of Rayong), there are hundreds and hundreds of rai of these fruits. Full sunlight, well drained soil, lots of water (rain) and during dry season drip irrigation.
Absolutely barren soil, no weeds at all as the weeds use nutrients necessary for the plant to survive. In fact some plantations put down black plastic. This reduces the weed problem and holds moisture in the soil.
Both the yellow and red varieties are grown. Typically using cement posts, occasionally you'll see wire running between the posts. Takes about 2 - 4 years to bear fruit apparently. After first production a yearly pruning takes place. (You'll see bundles of the removed segments for sale all around, just stick it in the ground, water and it roots apparently - like most plants here.)
Decent profit once the plantation is full blown producing. Check the price in your local market.......
One last thing. Only ONE segment per post is the normal planting. Seems the nutrients required for two adjacent plants is insufficient.
