Two Thai sex workers have been jailed for fleecing three elderly men of more than $250,000.

Nualpan Coxon, 67, and Pornthip Phonkoed, 63, both of Auckland, appeared slightly shocked in the Hamilton District Court this afternoon as Judge Stephen Clark sentenced them to different jail terms after a jury found the pair guilty of fraud charges in February.

Two of the victims, aged in their 80s and 70s, responded to "adults only" advertisements in newspapers for massages with a "happy ending", while the third victim met one of the women in a gold shop.

After providing services to two of the men, the women then set out about taking money from them, making misrepresentations about what the money was needed for.

Crown prosecutor Rebecca Mann: "Having entered into transactions for the early stages of the friendship, they then stopped charging money for the sexual acts ... and that of course is consistent with this ruse of an established friendship."

Coxon - jail two years and two months
Phonkoed - jail for two years and ten months

Phonkoed: It would be "unfair" if she was sent to jail because she hadn't done anything wrong. She had been working for her clients, not only sexually, but as well as providing everyday assistance including washing their hair - or more personal areas.
"It wasn't nice. It was very hard work," she said.

Actually, stiffing farangs could well be considered part of Thai culture by now.

As a felang who has seen the cultural Thai responsibilities and rewards when their Thai parents can no longer bring home the bacon. I have also witnessed British "culture" regarding managing older parents. Which in my opinion is less inclusive.

Out in the Thai sticks, they are provided for by their children. I can assure you there are cultural,"rules", if not legal understandings. The eldest child cares for them and after death takes over any assets and obligations.

In my particular situation when I joined my Thai wife's family, there were a mother and father and four children. Three were from the same parents and one from an earlier father who I have never seen. Her brother and one half sister lived awy from the family home. Her brother died, one sister is from the other father, one sister is dependent due to a child illness and the last is my wife. My wife's mother died a few of years ago.

My wife and I live in her house and her father lives in his house and his dependent daughter, next door.

Recently, I was told by my wife that her father was to take on a mia noi. She was happy for him, as I was, but concerned over the new mia noi's status. She consulted the village head man and was advised of the "rules" upon her fathers' death.

She was informed and papers were signed that being the senior full child, she would inherit all her fathers property and responsibilities. Her father's farm, house and any other assets. Also, the responsibility of caring for her dependent sister. Her father's yet to arrive, mia noi would leave the house and return to her family home. She seems happy and as the documents are in Thai I have accepted the "rules" are being followed.

Her father is a typical older Thai village man. Tough as old bricks, but ageing. He manages his farm most of the year by himself, employs local help at harvest time and makes enough income for him and his daughter to survive Thai style. Up at five in the morning, feed the monks, off to work until 3 pm, a shower, a meal and falls asleep in front of his blaring TV, he's pretty deaf. 6 days a week.

That's my experience of one aspect of Thai village culture.

How much does a live-in companion, house keeper and sex slave cost in NZ per month? No mention of the length of time they have been performing these tasks for. Was it 6 months, 6 years, 20 years?

I wonder who instigated the court case, the probably happy elderly men, doubtful, or the elderly men's greedy children who have welcomed their fathers' lifestyle for years, but now, looking at their inheritance being reduced, decided to get rid of the ladies.
