British man jailed in Dubai for sending Whatsapp message to dealer about dodgy car

A British man was allegedly jailed in Dubai after sending an angry Whatsapp message to a car dealer who ripped him off.
Yaseen Killick, 29, had been working in the Middle East as an estate agent with wife Robyn for a short while before the pair returned to the UK to start a family. While there, the pair say they bought a £6,000 VW Golf from a dealer that broke down within hours. After finding out the car had previously been written off, Yaseen wrote an angry Whatsapp message to the dealer asking: ‘How do you sleep at night?’


He didn’t think anything of it but when they tried to fly home to London for Christmas, the couple were stopped at the airport. Police then arrested Yaseen and he spent three weeks in jail before he was able to get out, according to The Sun. The 29-year-old told the newspaper: ‘It was a nightmare. The prison conditions were horrific. ‘I was treated appallingly – all for sending a WhatsApp message.’ This follows a number of cases where Brits have been held in the United Arab Emirates for questionable ‘crimes’.

Which turned out to be Temazepam, Clonazepam and Citalopram, for which he did not have a prescription. Would you go through an airport with controlled drugs and no prescription, unless you'd bought them on Sukhumvit?

The father-of-three has also been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer which the UAE was “refusing to give him treatment” for, Detained in Dubai added. He is due to stand trial on 15 January.

“Perry needs urgent treatment for his prostate cancer," said Radha Stirling, the organisation’s chief executive. "To deny him this in a timely fashion is a gross violation of his human rights. We hope that the UAE will show compassion to Perry and his children, and release him immediately, so that he can return home for the medical treatment he needs.”

Calling for his release, Mr Coppins’ family said denying him cancer treatment was “like giving him a death sentence”.

He has two daughters, Pia, 24, and Mia, 10, and a 21-year-old son, Cameron, in the UK.

"It’s so cruel. Nobody should be treated like this. He is not a young man and he needs medical help to cope with his anxiety," said Pia. “Not being allowed his cancer treatment is like giving him a death sentence. Does human life mean nothing to those people?”

Mr Coppins’ ex-wife Lesley added: “Perry and I spilt up, but he is a good man who loves his kids. I really hope the Dubai authorities decide to do the humane thing and let him free. Those medicines are taken by millions of people. He needs them to function.”

Ms Stirling said she believed Mr Coppins was stopped by an “overzealous” customers official, who rejected his prescription paperwork and called in police.

She added: “UAE laws on medicines are often vague and frontline law enforcement officials are frequently unaware of exactly what the rules permit or prohibit, so they make uneducated and arbitrary judgment calls

I travel with beta blockers and the convicts gave me a hard time because I didn't have the actual paper with me, so now I carry a copy in my washbag with the pills.

If you travel with prescription drugs, you should always carry at least a copy of the prescription.

I dare say if he had one he probably wouldn't have had any hassle.

Another thing that surprises me regarding the cancer patient is what the fuck were his company doing?

Every company has a local gopher, and he very probably could have been bailed if they'd sent someone down there with some money and a copy of his prescription.

If they thought they were going to end up fining him, they'd usually set the bail as the same amount as the fine.
