Bride sues runaway groom after dowry dispute

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A wedding in Phimai district was abruptly cancelled after a groom and his relatives walked away with the dowry following a quarrel with the bride’s family over the amount.
The incident prompted relatives to take abandoned bride-to-be Benjaporn Wareesri to file a complaint with police against runaway groom Adirek Chadachan on Saturday.
Thongwai Muangmuntri, 64, told police that her niece, an employee of AIS in Bangkok, and her boyfriend from Phichit had agreed to tie the knot as they had known each other for quite some time.
The woman’s family had asked for a dowry of 100,000 baht and one-baht weight of gold (worth around 21,000 baht at current prices) and the man’s family agreed, said Mrs Thongwai.

The wedding was scheduled for Saturday morning at the woman’s house in Phimai district. The 25-year-old bride had handed out 100 wedding invitations to guests. More than 50 tables were arranged for a Chinese banquet afterward.
The 24-year-old groom and some 20 relatives and friends travelling from Phichit arrived at the bride’s house in five vehicles early Saturday.
The procession of family members and other arrangements went smoothly in the morning until a problem emerged during the counting of the dowry money.
The bride’s relatives found only 50,000 baht in cash and one-baht weight of gold in the tray of gifts from the groom to the bride’s parents, said Mrs Thongwai.
The two families held talks, with the bride’s family asking the groom to give the remaining 50,000 baht after the wedding. But the groom’s relatives insisted they had given all they could give. A quarrel erupted and the groom and his relatives walked off with the cash and gold and drove away.
The bride burst into tears and fainted, said her aunt. After her niece regained consciousness, they took her to file the complaint.
They said they wanted the man to take responsibility for his actions, which had brought shame to the woman and her family. They also wanted him to pay all wedding expenses.
While police were questioning the woman, her relatives managed to contact the groom on the phone and asked him to negotiate at the police station. However, the groom refused. This sparked a fresh quarrel over the phone before he turned off his mobile phone and left for Phichit.
Pol Lt Denchai Chamnarnnaimuang, deputy chief of the Phimai police station, said police would call the groom in an attempt to settle the dispute.
The initial questioning found that the woman only wanted the man to pay all the expenses incurred from the wedding. The dowry, the family said, was no longer an issue as the wedding had been cancelled.

This reminds me of my BiL when he decided to have a village wedding up in Udon. All things were settled prior to getting there with the G/F family, pigs to be killed, sin sot etc. Only once we got there the family said no to the wedding. They wanted more pigs killed and a bigger sin sot.
After about a 4 hour stand off MiL paid for an extra pig and took gold off her wrist to up the sin sot. The wedding went ahead but not in a happy way. Marriage lasted no longer than 3 months. :)

Yes, when I got married I had to pay for a dowry, the wedding, the food, etc...

Then the whole village turned up for a free meal, booze and party. They tied money to me and the wifes wrists. Wow, I thought, we're actually getting money back. I was happy. After the ceremony I went to my wife and asked her how much money we'd been given back. It came to 14,000 baht. I said to her great that will pay off some of what I've forked out on this wedding. She said no, I gave it to the villagers who helped set up the wedding in the morning. The rest she said went on more free booze.

I was angry but kept it in. Marriage in Thailand in my opinion should be only registered. Ceremonies are a big rip off. It's a big show on whose got the most money in the village contest.

Similar here except and I've never thought about it until now. FIL wanders around when we visit mumbling about 100,000 baht. My wife says he's crazy.

Son sot was never asked for by my MIL. Mrs Naam wouldn't have paid it anyway. She said her mum would just give it to the temple or her orphan ne'er-do-well nephew, so what's the point?
At my FiL's funeral this week, and MiL introduces me to her friends as her son, which she never used to do, but I feel she's happy with me now, whereas at first she was just indifferent.

50, 000 baht is not a lot to break a marriage over.

No my MiL never asked but just expected me to pay her one. Irrespective, my MiL has had more out of me than she'd have got in asking for a sin sot. You can't have it both ways in my book.

First Xmas as a married couple (in England) the wife says we should buy some 'better' presents for relatives instead of my usual card and wrapped up bottle of booze or chocolates.
Thought it would be great to get my little sister a decent washer & tumble dryer as she'd just started a family, wife agreed then I never heard the fucking end of it everytime we had an argument for years afterwards.

It's in threads like these that I expect Piwanoi to pop up and give his 'wisdom' on the topic.

You did well, I forked out 200k, 100k back after and the other 100k was for the wedding. Crafty sods spent as little as possible on the wedding to pocket the remainder along with all the envelope money. Never given them anything since, think it was mainly her dad and he's dead now. About a year later they did the house up in a crappy Issan sort of way, so I imaging that was my money they used. This is all so tacky and unpleasant, but so typically Thai. Never did find out how much the wedding cost, about 45k I think, it's not a subject for conversation :rolleyes:

14k is exactly what we got, I asked her what she wanted to do, I was for spending it, she said no keeping it for the future. I still lived in the UK then, when I went back 4 months later it had all been spent, on food probably! Anyway my sister sent me a belated cheque as a wedding present, so I told her I was keeping that, stingy foreigner. They lie their faces off to impress the village, she borrowed loads of gold to what we had and I think more sinsot money was on the plate as well, childish twats. I don't like to look at the wedding pics I always think how different I would have done it if I knew then what I know now. :)
