The Duke of Edinburgh is retiring from royal duties this autumn, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The decision was made by Prince Philip himself and is supported by the Queen, a palace spokesman said.

The duke, who turns 96 next month, will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations.
The Queen "will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements", the palace said.

The duke carried out 110 days of engagements in 2016, making him the fifth busiest member of the royal family, according to Court Circular listings.
He is patron, president or a member of more than 780 organisations and will continue to be associated with them, but "will no longer play an active role by attending engagements", Buckingham Palace said.

In the statement, the spokesman said the duke "may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time".

BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said the duke - the longest-serving consort in British history - "clearly feels he now wishes to curtail" his "familiar role" in support of his wife.

He added: "The Queen is going to continue, of that there is no doubt. She will continue, albeit with a somewhat lightened workload."
He stressed there were "no health considerations" behind the move - other than the normal health precautions for a man in his mid-90s.

He's had a hard life jetting around the globe living a life of the utmost luxury - waving at people, cutting ribbons, unveiling plaques and insulting all and sundry - he's long overdue putting his feet up from that lifetime of hard graft.

I was in Ireland when Princess Di was murdered.

There was hardly a dry eye there when the news came through, the shock and dismay was palpable.

What was even more amazing was the numbers of young Irishmen that took off to London afterwards to lay flowers for her at Kensington Palace gates, giving up a few days work and then the added expense of travelling from Sligo to London and back.

Someone ordered the assassination, it was no accident.

Di was scared stiff of getting bumped off campaigning against landmines, one of the products her ex Charley boy was flogging off around the world at the time.

England's royal family have a long history of selling arms.

Charley boy only recently (2015) regretted doing so, and has tried to move away from the deal, but Prince Andrew then took up the position as Britain's chief arms salesman.

Because no human is more important than any other human based on the family they're born into.

Because they're an outdated throwback, and a truly fair, just and democratic society cannot exist while they continue to.

Because they symbolise and perpetuate an archaic system of heriditary privelege based on keeping an undeserving minority in the utmost luxury at the expense of the majority.

Because while they live a life of luxury many of their "subjects" are struggling to put food on the table.

Because they cost the country money while offering absolutely nothing tangible in return.

Because the institution of monarchy is fundamentally undemocratic, and utterly unnecessary in this day and age. Their role could be performed just as well by an elected head of state.
