Bar manager was arrested after offering an undercover cop sex with a minor for 1000 baht

A Soi Buakhao beer bar was raided last night after reports were received that one bar had been providing under-aged girls for sex with tourists.

Twenty-four-year old Wannada Man-in, the manager of the Relax Bar, was arrested after she offered an undercover cop sex with a seventeen-year-old girl for just 1000 baht.

Investigating officers had marked and copied a 1000 baht note which was used in payment and later found in her possession. A box of condoms was also taken as evidence.

Wannida has been detained at Pattaya Police Station after being charged with trafficking of minors and prostituting minors for sex.

The seventeen-year old girl, named only at ‘A’, has been removed to a hostel.

Who'd be a minor, eh? Dark, dangerous job underground chipping away at little coal seams with the threat of cave-ins, toxic gas, explosions and redundancy hanging over you all the time.
Add the fact that it also seems to be illegal for minors to have sex with anyone, and it's a job that seems to have very few prospects indeed.

It's actually quite serious to mark a Bank (the Thais say Bank, where we say Note).

The officers defamed an image of the (dearly departed) King, whether directly or indirectly and that's a major no-no.

Interestingly, sexual relations between adults aged 16 are legal, but if it involves commerce, it's illegal, but the accepted age raises to 18 (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm not stating an opinion, just stating a fact, as known to me.

One of my (future) nieces left home @ 14 to move in with her (then) bf. Both got jobs, she was waitressing, no idea about him. They also rented a flat. Both, of course, illegal.

Her Mum was disapproving but didn't stop her. At least she got the doctor to give her the 3 month 'pill' as an injection into her arm. Again Illegal.

My (future) niece's friend, who I know and is a nice lassie, fell for the trap and now is a mother @ 15.

A distant relative, had a son when she was 13, then twins when she was 15. Both Fathers have done a runner (surprise, surprise) then she did a runner on her kids and left them with their Grandad, who juggles working and taking care of the kids. How, I don't know.

What we do is to bring our twin boys clothes they'd grown out of, toys etc and simply give them to the Grandad so that his burden is lessened.

Life, for sum, in Thailand is a beast, the like of which we see rarely in the West these days ... maybe in the 1800's ... but not (thankfully) now.

Living with the extended family, where I am just one male in much larger network of extended family, I get to see, first hand, some of the stuff that the Thais get up up on a regular basis, without being filtered through a partners eyes.

From the other link, while it might appear kosher, the legal descriptions being discussed, because they refer to the parental rights over the child are not relevant to the OP.
Legally established parents are given parental rights over the child. The child is subject to parental control of the parents until the child is legally determined to be an adult. Adulthood occurs when the child reaches the age of majority which is 20 years old in Thailand or when the child gets married. Until this time, parents have rights and obligations to their child.
From Age of Consent ...
The Age of Consent in Thailand is 15 years old. The age of consent is the minimum age at which an individual is considered legally old enough to consent to participation in sexual activity. Individuals aged 14 or younger in Thailand are not legally able to consent to sexual activity, and such activity may result in prosecution for statutory rape or the equivalent local law.
Thailand statutory rape law is violated when an individual has consensual sexual intercourse with a person under age 15. However, sex with a minor under age 18 is a compoundable offense, regardless of consent.

Again, I'm not trying to make a statement, just to clarify the legal Thai Law.

For david 48, you are off track there. I used the oxford definition as an easy source.

However, a child is defined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a person of under the age of 18, unless the country has an earlier age of majority. In thailand the age of majority is 20. So in thailand a child is defined as someone under the age of 18.

Note, that the age of consent, and the age of majority are very different things. And frankly, age of consent has nothing to do with the issue.
