American Snack Foods

I'll be moving to Pattaya in April. My plan is to buy and ship some non-perishable food items that aren't available in Pattaya. But I need some help in identifying them. All suggestions are welcome, but here are a few specific things that I enjoy, and will include in my shipment, if not available there. Shoppers, man your carts! ...

Good ground coffee. (I drink Starbuck's "Sumatra" or "French Roast" here.)
--- Not a food, but are coffee grinders available for a reasonable price?
"Low Salt" Peanut Butter. (Like "Jiffy" brand)
Pretzel sticks (Not twists, sticks)
Mixed nuts (not the type on this forum, the edible kind!)
Canned salmon
Canned chili without beans
Canned New England Clam Chowder
"Classico" brand pasta sauce
Grated cheese - preferably Romano

And how about vitamins and health supplements like:

Glucosamine
Selenium
Multi Vitamins

You noted things not available in Pattaya. Some of the thigns you mention (in bold) I am quite sure I've seen at the supermarkets there. The other things might be available in Bangkok. If you buy them in your home-country it might be easier, however, if these things, are important to you.

I prefer to buy Vitamins, minerals and supplements in my home-country because the brands are of good qaulity, and they are usually cheaper.

Clam chower might be a toughie, Emporium; fuckin'expensive, that one, I'll bet.

Bring me about a dozen boxes of them Stouffers (sp?) pepperoni pizza breads willya? In excahnge i'll take you to the best village for fresh roasted coffee, hell, i'll even get 'em to roast you a special batch for a couple of them pizza things.

Those Stouffers pizza breads are frozen, Frankie! That would be a little tough! :-) As for the chili, the best canned stuff here is Stagg. I think I'll bring some.

The supermarkets in Pattaya are better than in BKK you can get all of that there. That is for sure. Foodland and the Thai owned supermarket in North Pattaya near the roundabout. Its a lot like Villa in BKK, a really nice deli as well.

Hell Pattaya has KFC, Burgerking and Mcdonalds, what else do Americans eat? :)

What's really missing for me is all the other international foods I used to buy back in the Bay Area. That, and real sourdough bread!!! Makes me drool just thinking about it

I've seen Campbell's Clam Chowder in Tops.

I have cambells clam chowder in my kitchen, 39 baht a can I believe, obviously not as good as the stuff you get from that gay community on the bay at fishermans wharf, what was that called? oh yes, san fran frisco :)

Well, DD, THIS American doesn't eat at any of those. My favorite "fast food" place here is 'El Pollo Loco'. They prepare barbequed, not fried, chicken. Much healthier, and very much tastier, with mexican spices.

Of course, I do need an occasional cheeseburger fix. Here, I get those from 'Carl's Jr', which has a great burger made much more like the traditional style.

Most of my diet in Thailand will be Thai food. My wife is a great cook. So I'll just mix in some American food a couple of times a week to keep me from losing my American charm! ;)

I have a diet of ice cream!

Maybe I should cut down on it.... Nah! I love ice cream more than males.

Sorry to torture you like that, Frankie. Too bad you're way up in Chiangmai. Otherwise I'd bring an extra can for you when I get there. I'll be sharing your regret about the loss of real California sourdough bread, by the way. But I do like other kinds of fresh bread, and I'm told there's a place near Mabprachan Reservoir that has very good bread.

'Campbells' would have to do, I suppose. But it's down the list of the canned varieties. The best is 'Snow's', with 'Progresso' right behind.

As for San Francisco's clam chowder, it's good. But, umm, why do you think they call it "New England" clam chowder? The best is the original, made with more clam broth, and much less thickening, in my home town, Boston.

Fuckin biggO hairy fisherman mincing up in a miniskirt servin' up a hogged out sourdough loaf filled with New England Clam Chowder. To many Taiwanese tourist for me, no thanks, over the hill (Powell) right at Geary. An Anchor steam, pastrami on rye sauerkraut, some ancient broad ticklng the Ivorys, singing Cole Porter. Sit in the back all night. Maybe head up to Mitchell bros and get a 'massage'
35+ years in or around SF been to Fishermans wharf, maybe 5-8 times. Never been to alcatraz although I sailed past it a hundred times. They got gay fishermen there? Probably brought 'em n from Bristol...
Sad, really, them foriegners come for a visit and never get past the "gay community" San Francisco, the place where a straight man only has to breath a few times a minute to get laid (by a woman) and these Tourist from Taiwan and the Uk spend all their time in The Castro. checkin' out the leather boys.

I know that, Fabian. But from what I've heard, they don't carry the same varieties that are sold here in the U.S. Now, that seems odd to me, since the coffees are from all over the world. But that's what I was told.

Do you buy there, or visit for a cup now and then? If so, maybe you can check it out for me. My favorite varieties are 'Sumatra' and 'French Roast'. If those are sold there, I'm all set.

I am new to this site and traveling in general. My uncle lives in Bangkok and invited me over for his wedding. I've never been outside the US, so I am worried about a bunch of things. Although rice and stir fry is OK, I would rather eat American food while I am there. You know like burgers, pizza, fried chicken (people food). Do they have McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and KFC in Thailand? Also, I did a google search and saw that their are some terrorist in the South. Have they ever attacked Bangkok? Would they target Americans? Thanks for your help. I'm really nervous about this trip.

You're making a big mistake if you don't eat Thai food while you're here. I've asked about American food ONLY so that I can have a bit of it occasionally. But I will be living on Thai food most of the time there, as I do here, having been married to a Thai for the last 33 years.

Now, if you MUST eat junk food, rather than the outstanding Thai food available there, go to it. You'll find Burgerking, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and KFC, among others. Admittedly, their food does taste different than what you'd get in one of them in the U.S. But, after all, junk is junk!

C'mon, take a shot. Eat Thai while you're there. If you go to quality places, I guarantee you'll get hooked! If you don't like hot and spicy, don't worry. It is NOT all like that. Just get some help from someone to either order foods that are not hot, or request the spicy stuff be just "one chili". That won't be intolerable to you.

In the past people would have posted questions like this only Lonely Planet, hoping to get the answer they're looking for but, as our fame spreads I guess we should expect more folks to ask the many resident experts residing here.

Randy, Bangkok is really like any major American city. You're going to love it! It's wall-to-wall KFC, MacDonalds, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Wendys, Walmart, etc. and everybody here speaks American! Yup, not just English but Good ole USofA speak.
It's a great place. We got black people driving taxis and opening doors, chinese people cooking food and doin' laundry, hell we evn got some Limey's over here to walk around funny and talk that crazy talk they do.
man, you're gonna love it here, get yer ass on that plane pronto.

Yes in Bangkok because of the amount of tourism there are McDonalds, KFC ad Pizza Hut and many places smilar also.

I'd urge you to try the local cusine too. It isn't just rice and stir fry!

If you look under my avatar, you will realize that I am not in Thailand. I have just had a coffee there during my last vacation and seen that they sell coffee and coffeemakers but unfortunately I do not remember which kind of coffee they had on offer.

For vacations I bring my own grounded coffee with me.

I guess there is not enough demand for that kind of food because else Bill Heinecke would have already opened a chain of Taco Bell restaurants.
