Hillsborough Jury Reaches Decisions On Deaths

The Hillsborough inquests jury has reached decisions on all questions related to the deaths of 96 football fans.

Jurors have crucially reached a decision on the one question they had not been able to agree on - whether the fans were unlawfully killed.

Last week they indicated they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, but the coroner said today he would accept a majority verdict.

The jury has indicated that at least seven of the nine members agree.

Question six asks: "Are you satisfied, so that you are sure, that those who died in the disaster were unlawfully killed?"

The decisions will be announced after 11am tomorrow (26 April) so that all the families are able to make it to the Warrington courtroom.

The two-year inquest into the 1989 tragedy has been the longest jury hearing in British legal history, with more than 800 witnesses giving evidence.

Fourteen questions were put to the jury, and they must also record the time and cause of death for each of the Liverpool fans who died.

The questions include whether failings by Sheffield Wednesday FC or the behaviour of fans contributed to the "dangerous situation" at Hillsborough.

The jury will also answer on the actions of South Yorkshire Ambulance Service and South Yorkshire Police and whether any "error of omission ... caused or contributed to the loss of lives".

The fans died at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest - held at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium - on 15 April 1989.

Thousands were crushed after police gave an order to open a gate, allowing more supporters into the already crowded fenced-in terraces.

During the inquest, family members delivered emotional tributes to the victims in the form of personal portraits.

The original inquest verdict of accidental death was quashed in 2012 after evidence suggested more lives might have been saved had the emergency response been more effective.

Families of the victims killed in the Hillsborough disaster have paid a moving tribute to the 96 fans who died, breaking into a spontaneous chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Campaigners and families assembled outside the inquest in Warrington on Tuesday to sing the emotional rendition of the Liverpool FC anthem after a jury decided the football fans were “unlawfully killed”.

They stood waving scarves and some holding pictures of their children, who were crushed to death at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground 27 years ago.

After the song, there were chants of “Justice for the 96”, marking a turning point in the long-fought campaign by families for the truth about how their loved ones died and who was to blame.

The inquest jury of six women and three men delivered their verdicts just after 11am on Tuesday, almost 30 years after the stadium crush, concluding the longest jury proceedings in English legal history and coming after a protracted battle for justice.

The jury, sitting in Warrington, Cheshire, found police planning errors ‘caused or contributed’ to the dangerous situation that developed on the day of the disaster.

Famous footballers, pundits and Liverpudlians paid tribute to the Hillsborough victims.

However, the Hillsborough tragedy was made significantly bad by the white and black square brigade pretending to be policemen and the sun and times pretending to be journalism focused news papers.

It's just a settlement process to allow bigger payments to close it out. The verdict was ridiculous on numerous levels, a total miscarriage of justice for political reasons.

The families get more money. Scousers feel good. Case closed. No truths involved...

They really want a criminal prosecution to be won, but that is unlikely to happen. The truth though is out there, and as often is the case is a mix of the two versions of events. The Scousers were pushing up, crushing people towards gate C. Inexperienced copper in charge decided he had to open Gate C to stop people dying, did so, and scousers pushed through into the pig pens that soccer louts get caged in, and promptly killed 96 people.

Coppers blamed the scousers to get out of trouble, and the scousers blamed the cops to alleviate their guilt that is actually their actions in pushing that killed people.

Just goes to show what my dad always said was right- you can not trust a copper or a scouser.

I've been in similar situations at a similar time, and if I'd fallen with the pressure of the crowd surging then... It was a reaction to crowd violence and containment of that time (Millwall riots, Liverpool crowd criminality around Europe, ICF, etc). It has all been taken out of context and lied about.

But, yes, the police made errors and then lied. &, yes the match should have been put back, timewise. But, the Scousers shouldn't have come with bent tickets in massively oversubscribed numbers, rushing through gates and causing chaos - it was a clusterfuk all around; a product of the time rather than a situation where any specific party was to blame, imho.

^ indeed. If they had not opened the gate, there would have been a different tragedy and they would be up in court for not opening the gate.

The issues are about the lying and the crass lies in the media. If it had not been for that, it would have all blown over. It really shines a very strong light though onto the utter corruption in the police in the way that really, on the really important stuff, they lie, fabricate, and stick together to save themselves. They are no different to the scousers.

I know lots of scousers, and every one of them had a friend or relative who died there, same as they are all related to the beetles.

However you can argue the toss if you like, but if they had not been pushing... it would not have happened. The big cheese cop was useless and did cause the actual accident, but he did that to stop another one happening.

only if you are being dishonest, you are able to do that. This happened because outside the ground people were pushing. If they had not been pushing, then there would have been no need to open the Gate C, which lead to the awful events. The inquest asked the jury is "misbehavior" by the supporters lead to this, and they came back with NO. But pushing and surging is not misbehavior, it is the nature of an unruly crowd. No one, aside from you it seems, disputes that people were pushing.

The present Chief Constable of South Yorkshire has just been suspended by the Police Commissioner.

The point was, at that time, the way football matches were managed with supporters caged and forced through small spaces, when gates were opened and crowds surged it was an uncontrollable force, and a tragedy like this was waiting to happen. It's very sad that it happened in this way before changes were made, but it was the supporters themselves, the stadium design and regulations, and the police management and many other factors that made such a situation inevitable. Not a bad decision by one policemen, but a whole social buildup over decades...

The lies, by all sides, but especially the authorities, are terrible.

This settlement has nothing at all to do with justice, it's politics to agree to give the Scousers some more money and end the entire process.

The truth is it was an inadequate stadium, the police were fucking useless, and when the scousers reacted to having cups of piss and stones thrown at them, the eyeties did their usual and ran away, causing a wall to collapse.

There was plenty of blame to be shared around but they bunged it all on the mickey mousers in my opinion.

Anyway, even though I detest soccer, I will now be a Liverpool wendyball supported. Only been to 1 soccer match (Saints v Sheffield wednesday, 1:3 at the Dell) but can not claim to be a saints supporter. The only people I know passionate about this poofball game seem to support liverpool arsenal or chelsea, and londoners are twats anyway, so it looks like Liverpool it is. Does this Liverpool team win ever?

The abandoned semi final between Liverpool and Notts Forest was played a couple of weeks later. Liverpool won and went on to beat Everton in the final.

Couldn't they, shouldn't they, have scrapped the Cup for that year? Instead of 'the show must go on'....fortified with Gerry and the Pacemakers and black armbands and ' you'll never walk alone' and whatnot.
