Help Your Poor, Forget Falklands, Argentina Tells Britain

BUENOS AIRES—
Britain should spend more helping its own poor than on defending the Falkland Islands, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said Thursday, responding to a recently announced budget increase aimed at protecting the contested archipelago.

Britain's government said last week that it would reinforce its military presence on the Falklands to counter the "very live threat'' posed by Argentina.

Fernandez, in a speech honoring soldiers who died in her country's failed 1982 invasion of the South Atlantic islands, dismissed the idea of Argentina being a threat, telling Britain to focus instead on fighting poverty within its own borders.

"What a paradox,'' Fernandez chided, "when there are more than 1 million Britons eating at the food banks they have had to open in one of the most powerful countries in the world.''

"Don't spend another pound sterling on defending the Malvinas,'' she added, using the Argentine term for the Falklands. "Spend your money on feeding the English, on providing jobs for your young people and a better quality of life for the British, because we are not a threat to anyone.''

Tensions over the Falklands still simmer more than 30 years after Argentine forces seized the islands and Britain sent a task force to retake them in a brief war that saw more than 600 Argentine and 255 British servicemen killed.

Fiery orator Fernandez has stepped up her international campaign to get sovereignty over the islands as oil and gas exploration in the region increases the stakes. She vowed that Argentina would eventually win the Falklands back through diplomatic means, not military action.

Earlier Thursday, in a move Fernandez called "almost provocative,'' Premier Oil Plc and Falkland Oil and Gas Ltd. said they made an oil and gas discovery at a well in the archipelago, the first in a nine-month drilling campaign.

The islands lie 300 miles (480 kilometers) off the Argentine coast and 8,000 miles (12,870 kilometers) from Britain. About 2,800 people live on the islands, where the main industries are sheep farming, fishing and some tourism.

Britain said last week that it planned to deploy two Chinook helicopters to the Falklands beginning in mid-2016, upgrade communications and renew the surface-to-air missile defense system that's due to come out of service in 2020.

They found them some time ago around the late 90's or so if memory serves. Harsh weather semis have been working down there for a while.

Nice of Cristina to voice such concern for the starving poor in Britain...obviously a great humanitarian.

Maybe she should take a look out her window once in a while to see how the folks in Argentina are doing.....oh dear, they are out demonstrating in the street against her and her approval rating is a whopping 30%....how can that be?

They have been continuously occupied by people who consider themselves British for 250 years. Possession being 90% of the law and one of the basic factors in the determination of sovereignty it would seem the UK's claim is a good deal stronger than anything the Argies have come up with.

Geography has little or nothing to do with it. France has sovereign rights over two islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence which one would expect to be Canadian territory being as they are well inside the territorial limits, but occupancy and possession are the determinants....not location. The sovereignty of these two small islands also extends to include fishing and mineral rights.

By comparison the Falklands are a slam dunk for Britain and no amount of rhetoric, false claims and posturing at the UN is going to change that.

Oh yes I almost forgot , our army of creatures like this ,, single mother who is claiming over £38000 per year in benefits , I would imagine if they diverted a bit more conga her way the poor thing would be able to complete that much needed upgrade of the iphone5 to the newer 6 model ( kudos at the school gates ) also would be able to upgrade her broadband to super fast fibre optic and be able to afford the full SKY tv package .

Well the Argies do have one master stroke in their claim, apart from camping whalers. The Malvinas were supposedly given to what was then Patagonia, by Papal edict sometime in the 16th or early 17th century.....the question that arises, is how did the Pope manage to acquire ownership of the islands in the first place, so he could give them to Patagonia.

It was not unusual for some newly discovered bit of rock to be claimed in the name of the Pope by devout catholic Portuguese or Spanish explorers, much in the same way Cook claimed Australia for his completely crazy King...... so maybe there's a record somewhere.

Even if there is, the Falklands changed hands a few times between French, Dutch and British, before they were finally settled properly and established as British territory for 200+ years before the Argies got all excited about "getting them back" even though there is no real history of them substantially occupying them in the first place.

One of the strongest determining factors in establishing sovereign rights is continuous occupancy over a long period, and the British clearly have that in spades....not to mention the clearly stated wishes of the population of the place.

At the end of the day these islanders are the only long term native population that have lived on this island. I would say that gives them much stronger moral grounds for exersising their right to self determination and governance than say Canadians, Australians, Americans, Argentinians, Brazilians, Kiwi's to name a few.... where the majority population are long term migrants who have marginised the historical native populations and taken the country from them.

I would say to Fernandez go back to spain, and take the rest of johnny foreigner argies with you. Give the country back to the real Argentinians....


By the way, that paple bull. was it not the one that gave the east to Portugal and the west (with the exception of brazil) to spain?

Something to remember the UK was the worlds biggest power house ever to be known, and many Residents of the former colonies still have close Ties with there mother country.

We have some nice old family photos from the Falklands my father was on the island many years ago.
I know we have some old whale bone carvings plus sailors art work painted on whale bone from the old whaling station.

The Falkland islands are probably more British than the UK is...not many bloody foreigners invading the shores down there.

Falklands War 30 years on: ‘The British have learned nothing’

Thirty years after the UK and Argentina fought over the remote Falkland Islands, the war continues to resonate in both countries. Historian Hugh Bicheno says Britain has not learned from the conflict and the islands are still vulnerable to invasion.


After Britain managed to defend a British colony with a population numbering only 3,000 from invasion, Margaret Thatcher’s popularity was boosted, and her image as a strong leader was cast in iron. Argentina’s right-wing government, notorious for its human rights abuses, was humiliated and the stinging defeat hastened its collapse.

Cuban-born but Cambridge-educated, Hugh Bicheno was a UK intelligence officer on a mission in Argentina itself at the time of the conflict. He has also written Razor’s Edge, a top-selling and controversial account of the war, based on the testimonies of many who participated

RT's Ivor Bennett asked him if the Falklands conflict has any relevance today.

RT: You’ve said the British regarded the Falkland Islands as an inconvenience before the war broke out. Why is that?

Bicheno: You know how trendy the country is, and everyone charges in one direction at one time, so everyone at the time thought that we must get rid of the Empire to prove what a modern nation we were. We thought “we must shed our imperial past and everyone is going to like us again.” Overlooking the fact that people’s memories go a long way back.

RT:Why did Argentina invade?

Bicheno: The Argentines invaded because they were told that all Britain would do would be to yap to the UN. They were utterly dumbfounded when Thatcher decided to send down a taskforce. They were totally dumbfounded and totally unprepared for that.

RT:How well was the campaign conducted by the British?

Bicheno: Well, we had to do it. We had a legal and a moral obligation to those islanders, and if we didn’t keep our word to them we were worthless. How close was the campaign? My book is called Razor’s Edge for a reason – that whole operation could have gone either way at any stage. We didn’t underestimate the Argentines, we just didn’t have the capability. If it had lasted another six months, we couldn’t have done it. We had no more aircraft carriers, we would have had no more amphibious capability. If the Argentines had been better at certain small things, Britain could have easily lost the war.

RT:Why does the British government want to keep the islands?

Bicheno: Far from it, the British government desperately wants to get rid of the islands, but they just can’t get rid of them. After that war, it was politically impossible for the British government to sell out the islanders, however much the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Defence want to do it. You can’t do it. People remember and people will ask what the hell is this?

RT:Looking at subsequent conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan, have the British learned anything?

Bicheno: The British are very poor at learning the lessons of anything, broadly speaking because they never face up to the truth of learning about anything. The politicians, if they can, will draw the wrong conclusions about everything, and Blair got us into war after war after war for which we didn’t have the capabilities. We were put in Basra and we were put in Helmand when we didn’t have the capability. And one rages in vain against this, not because of censorship or because I will walk out of this room and be beaten up over what I say, but simply because my opinions and statements of fact will be ignored because they are inconvenient.
