Elon Musk indicates he’s ‘going all in’ on financing the GOP ahead of the midterms: ‘America is toast if the radical left wins’

In the aftermath of his spectacular falling out with President Donald Trump last year, Elon Musk blasted the Republican Party as a corrupt force that was "bankrupting" the United States of America.

But now, after months in the political wilderness, the volatile tech baron has indicated that he will once again devote his enormous fortune to electing GOP politicians, this time ahead of the midterm elections in 2026.

"America is toast if the radical left wins," declared Musk on X Thursday. "They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. Won’t be America anymore."

Musk's post quoted, and seemingly confirmed, another post from a conservative influencer who claimed that Musk was "going all-in" on funding Republicans this year.

That echoed reports from December that Musk had begun cutting "big checks" for congressional Republicans following a reconciliation dinner with Vice President J.D. Vance.

It is all a far cry from Musk's promise last July to plough his billions into a new "America Party" designed to break what he described as a bipartisan consensus in favor of government borrowing.

"When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," Musk claimed at the time. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."

Those plans quickly faltered as one of the world's foremost over-promisers, who has a long history of failed projects and missed deadlines, ran up against the boring, difficult work of actually getting a new party off the ground.

A super PAC aligned with President Donald Trump has nearly $300 million in its war chest heading into the 2026 midterms, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Thursday.

MAGA Inc. reported $294 million in cash on hand in its latest campaign finance disclosure, which the super PAC said will be used to support candidates aligned with the president's agenda.

Trump downplays GOP midterm expectations: The president ‘always loses’

President Trump downplayed Republicans’ midterm expectations in an interview with Sean Hannity that aired Thursday, acknowledging that the president’s party “always loses” no matter how successful they deem themselves to be.

“If you go back a long way, the sitting president, whether it’s Democrat or Republican, always loses the midterm, even if they’ve done well. Almost always,” Trump told Fox News’ Hannity.

“And, you know, you’d think it’d be like a 50/50 deal. Even if the president’s done a great job. I think we’ve done a great job. We’ve done maybe the best job ever in the first year, but they always seem to lose the midterm,” he continued.

Trump noted that he believes there is something “psychologically” at play with voters where they “maybe want a check or something.”

“I don’t know what it is exactly, but you would think when you have a victory and then on top of the victory you have a great, successful presidency would be an automatic win, but it’s never been a win,” the president said.

Trump Again Floats Idea of Cancelling Midterm Elections

There are those pundits who over time have cautioned us to pay attention, not to what Trump says, but what he does. But increasingly, what he says IS what he does.

Take the upcoming midterm elections. This past week, not for the first time, Trump floated the idea of cancelling the November 2026 midterms, then insisted he won’t. Given his lengthening record of promoting fantasies and outright lies, it’s hard to to believe the words.

There is no Constitutional method to do that. It is a fact that federal law leaves no room for a president to cancel or postpone congressional elections.

We are already learning that just because something is prohibited by the Constitution, does not mean Trump and his MAGA cohort won’t attempt a way around the law. Consider his military attacks on boats on the high seas or on Venezuela; both the authority of Congress spelled out in Article 1. Or his claim that he can do away with birthright citizenship, an actual Constitutional Amendment.

As reported this week by mainstream media, including Time Magazine, Trump is floating a trial balloon that he has the right to cancel future elections. He raised it with around 70 Republican House members during their annual retreat at the Kennedy Center. In his by now familiar style, he spoke it, then insisted that of course, he would do no such thing.

Then he did what he calls his “weave,” saying his words were really just a critique of how terrible the Democrats are, rather than a proposal. He went on to complain that the American public should be supporting him and his administration, “because we have the best policies,” and said he just can’t figure out why his poll numbers aren’t higher.

Trump failed to overturn the 2020 election, but how about 2026?

In a recent interview with a panel of New York Times reporters, the president said he regretted not ordering National Guard troops to seize voting machines he believes would have proven the 2020 election was stolen. But that idea, he said, had limitations.

“I don’t know that [guard members] are sophisticated enough,” he said, very much in the present tense. “You know, they’re good warriors. I’m not sure that they’re sophisticated enough in the ways of crooked Democrats, and the way they cheat, to figure that out.”

The president has other, more sophisticated people for that work. And they are already on the job. From top to bottom, the president has staffed out the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security, the agencies most directly involved with overseeing the casting and counting of ballots, with people who agree with his allegations about 2020.

The vetting process went all the way down to entry-level positions to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2020. Then-Attorney General Bill Barr and others wouldn’t go along with the plan of raising doubts, baseless or not, about the results in order to muddy the water and buy time for Trump allies in key states to throw out or supplant the official results.

This would be like a coach declining a penalty against the other team on a touchdown play. It all worked out, so no need to punish anybody. But as the president speaks about his concern of a third impeachment, cajoles state lawmakers for more favorable House maps in the same way he did when he was looking to “find” votes in 2020, pushes for a new census and tests the limits of presidential authority in deploying the military on U.S. soil, it’s hard to imagine him not trying again if Republicans lose bigly in November.

In one way, this looks like the most predictable election in quite a while: an unpopular president with unpopular policies, the ruthless certainty of the midterm curse for the party in power and an economy that is, at best, choppy.

The trick in a year like this would typically be like playing a “The Price Is Right” game and finding the right range of gains for the party out of power without falling off the edge. That would mean the next 42 weeks would be devoted to zeroing in on individual races to see whether Democrats were on their way to a fizzle — a narrow majority in the House and no net gains in the Senate — all the way up to a shoot-the-moon scenario in which Democrats end up with a 25-seat House majority and control of the Senate.

Another, governable president would be looking to move that range down for his party by either changing the circumstances or the perception of them to the electorate. Trump is doing some of that as he hurls out ideas for everything from capping interest rates to stimulus checks.

But one suspects that Trump’s biggest influence on the midterms won’t happen until after the votes are cast. State and local elections officials had better be ready for a big dose of ungovernability.

Democrats will spend millions to shift voter registration strategy ahead of the midterm elections

The Democratic National Committee will spend millions of dollars to cement control of voter registration efforts that have traditionally been entrusted to nonprofit advocacy groups and individual political campaigns, a shift that party leaders hope will increase their chances in this year's midterm elections.

The initiative, being announced on Tuesday, will begin in Arizona and Nevada with at least $2 million for training organizers. It's the first step in what could become the DNC's largest-ever push to sign up new voters, with a particular focus on young people, voters of color and people without college educations. All of those demographics drifted away from Democrats in the last presidential race, which returned Republican Donald Trump to the White House.

“It’s a crisis. And for our party to actually win elections, we have to actually create more Democrats,” DNC Chair Ken Martin said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Martin added that “we need all hands on deck, not just the outside groups,” as the party tries to win back control of Congress and break Republicans' unified control in Washington.

Democrats have spent decades relying on advocacy organizations and civic groups to register voters, but those efforts are generally required by law to be nonpartisan. Party leaders want a more explicitly partisan approach like the one used by Republicans, who have relied less on outside groups to register and mobilize their voter base.

Martin said allied nonprofits are “really important partners” that have “done amazing work to actually get people engaging in their democracy.”

"But in this moment right now, given the significant disadvantage that we have and the advantage the Republicans have, we actually have to do more,” he said.

The DNC initiative aims to reach non-college-educated young voters by recruiting organizers from a wide array of backgrounds, like gig economy workers and young parents, who have often been overlooked in the party’s grassroots efforts. Democrats hope that organizers' own perspectives and experiences will help party strategists learn how to connect with Americans in blue-collar roles who are disaffected with politics, whom the party fears it has lost touch with in recent elections.

“I think it’s incredible that Democrats are actually investing in reaching Democratic voters who have been left behind,” said Santiago Mayer, founder of Voters for Tomorrow, a progressive political youth group that is collaborating with the DNC. “We got killed on persuasion in 2024, and I think this is a really important step, fixing it and ensuring that we do not have a repeat of that in 2026."

The program will kick off with dozens of videos from lawmakers, activists and party leaders across the country. Democrats hope to boost enthusiasm for the program through interstate party competitions throughout the year.

If successful, the investments will provide a foundation that Democrats can rely upon beyond the fall midterm elections.

“This is a critical piece of the infrastructure that we’re building to actually not only win the moment in ’26 but to win the future," Martin said. “For us to put ourselves in a position to win in ’28 and ’30 and ’32, we actually have to keep doing this work and do it consistently.”

In a win for Democrats, court allows California's redistricting plan to proceed

A federal court has upheld the new congressional map approved by California voters last month, giving Democrats a chance to counter the nationwide redistricting effort led by President Trump and his Republican allies.

The court challenge to the redistricting plan had been brought by the California Republican Party and the U.S. Department of Justice. The court found that the new district map did not violate laws against racial gerrymandering.

The Republicans argued that the new map was motivated by a desire to increase the voting power of Latinos. The court, in a two-to-one ruling, rejected that claim, noting that voters approved the measure, called "Proposition 50" and there was no evidence they acted on racial grounds.

#5 - MANAGING MIDTERM EXPECTATIONS

The president expressed frustration that his Republican Party could lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate in this year’s midterm elections, citing historical trends that have seen the party in power lose seats in the second year of a presidency.

“It's some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don't win the midterms,” Trump said. He boasted that he had accomplished so much that “when you think of it, we shouldn't even have an election.”

Democrats' odds of winning back the House of Representatives this year just got better.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted 18 midterm races in a direction more favorable to them. In an analysis published Jan. 15, eight elections moved from "Likely Democrat" to "Solid Democrat" outlooks, while seven others moved into "Toss Up" or "Lean Democrat" territory. Three others shifted from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican."

Among the areas now being characterized as toss-ups are Iowa's third congressional district and New York's 17th, both of which currently have Republican representatives. Ohio's ninth district and Texas' 34th, which have Democrats representing them but were initially leaning toward the GOP, also moved to toss-up range.

President Donald Trump's approval ratings and Democrats' overperformance during recent special elections are both indicators working in the party's favor, according to Cook analyst Erin Covey.

"House Democrats only need to flip three seats to win a majority," wrote Covey. "Even if Democrats lose some of their own members defending particularly difficult seats, the number of Republicans in peril should give Democrats more than enough opportunities to win 218 seats."

Trump’s immigration crackdown faces growing disapproval from voters

President Trump is facing signs that his immigration crackdown is losing popularity with American voters as fallout grows from the fatal shooting of a Minnesota woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer this month.

Recent polling has found Trump’s approval on immigration at a low point and shown that even some Republican voters are critical of immigration officers’ approach.

The poll numbers come as some high-profile figures on the right have criticized ICE in the wake of the Minneapolis shooting, underscoring the potential political liability for the party as it heads into the midterms.

"We will be ungovernable": Resistance 2.0 pivots to disruption

Mass movements against the Trump administration are poised to take a different form in year two: more disruptive and potentially more violent.

Why it matters: Tens of thousands of Americans are expected to participate in walkouts on Tuesday, the one-year anniversary of President Trump's inauguration, setting the stage for what future resistance could look like.

• "The vanguard in this are starting to think about how ... one day, peaceful, legally permitted marches are not enough to push back" against the administration, Dana Fisher, a professor at American University's School of International Service, said.
• "And they're starting to think through what types of tactics are ones that people are comfortable with and would be willing and open to participating in to expand the toolbox."

Driving the news: To mark the second year of Trump's term, people are encouraged to walk out of work, school and commerce on Jan. 20 at 2pm local time as part of the "Free America" protest.

• "A free America begins the moment we refuse to cooperate," the movement's website said. "This is not a request. This is a rupture. This is a protest and a promise. In the face of fascism, we will be ungovernable."
• About 800 Free America events were planned as of Monday afternoon, with more than 38,200 RSVPs.

The other side: "President Trump is making America greater than ever before for all Americans," White House spokesperson Liz Huston said in a Monday statement.

"Our folks want to do more than just mass mobilization," said Tamika Middleton, the managing director of Women's March, which organized the walkout. "They want to actually say that we withdraw our consent from what is happening" in this administration.

• Tuesday's protests follow several high-profile events in Minnesota after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good. Those protests prompted Trump to threaten to invoke the rarely used Insurrection Act, though he said Friday that there is currently "no reason" to do so.

The big picture: Last year, protest turnout peaked at 7 million people during second No Kings rally in October. Future protests could see 12 million participants, or about 3.5% of the U.S. population, per the Center for American Progress.

• 3.5% of a population is considered the point at which it's difficult for governments to ignore calls for change, Harvard Kennedy School research shows.

Friction point: "I don't think that there is an intervention that will have the MAGA regime see the error of its ways," Rachel O'Leary Carmona, Women's March executive director, said.

• "I do think there are interventions that demonstrate the political, electoral and financial cost of authoritarianism in our communities, and those are the things that we have to be focused on."

State of play: Anti-Trump protests in 2025 were largely peaceful, despite the president and some allies stoking fears of violence and insisting — without providing evidence — that protesters were paid.

• Preliminary survey data shared exclusively with Axios by Fisher shows an increase in protesters who are open to political violence.
• As of Jan. 16, 34% of those polled agreed that Americans "may have to resort to violence in order to save our country."
• That's up 11 percentage points from protesters surveyed at the October No Kings protest, and slightly down from a peak of 40% at the June No Kings protest.

"Only so many more people [can] get murdered in front of cameras who are peaceful protesters in cities at the hands of ICE before there are going to be some folks in the streets who feel like peaceful non-violence is not enough," Fisher said.

Americans paying almost entirely for Trump tariffs: Study

A new study from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy found that Americans bore 96 percent of the costs incurred by President Trump’s tariffs last year.

The study, which analyzed shipment-level data covering over 25 million transactions, found that firms importing goods into the U.S. absorbed only 4 percent of the costs from the levies. The remaining 96 percent was passed on to American buyers, while U.S. customs revenue surged by roughly $200 billion last year.

The Kiel Institute noted that firms passed on tariff costs to buyers due to, among other reasons, the existence of other markets in Europe, Asia or elsewhere and difficulties switching suppliers.

Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs on foreign partners last April, imposing a baseline 10 percent tax on all imports and higher rates for certain countries, such as China, and specific sectors, such as automobile parts, steel and aluminum.

The president has since increased tariffs on imports from Brazil and India to 50 percent. He reversed course on Brazil in November, lifting levies on food imports, including coffee, fruit, cocoa and beef.

On Saturday, he threatened 10 percent tariffs starting Feb. 1 on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Finland, the U.K. and the Netherlands over their support for Greenland’s sovereignty.

Trump added that the levies will increase to 25 percent on June 1, and will remain in place until Danish and Greenlandic officials agree to grant the U.S. control of the mineral-rich island.

Last month, inflation hit 2.7 percent, down slightly from 3 percent in January. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in December that the president’s tariffs are causing “most” of the overshooting of the central bank’s 2 percent inflation target.

“We do think of those as likely to, in the current situation, likely to be a one-time … price increase,” Powell told reporters.

Virginia Democrats are moving to pass a new House map that will allow them to net a handful of seats ahead of the November midterms.

Democrats in the Old Dominion passed a constitutional amendment for a second time last week to allow the party to redraw the congressional lines by 2030.

Democrats hold 6-point lead over GOP on generic ballot: Poll

Democrats are ahead of Republicans by 6 percentage points on a generic congressional ballot, according to a poll released Thursday.

In the Emerson College poll, 48.1 percent of respondents backed a Democratic candidate in a hypothetical 2026 match-up. The Republican candidate garnered 41.7 percent backing in the hypothetical matchup and 10.2 percent were undecided.

The poll comes in the wake of rocky political territory for Republicans, who have been facing criticism over affordability, files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and President Trump’s recent foreign policy moves.

Democrats also notched victories in key political races last year, locking down important races including the gubernatorial contests for New Jersey and Virginia.

In a polling average from Decision Desk HQ, Trump has a 41.4 percent approval rating and a disapproval rating of 56.2 percent.

Democratic strategist James Carville predicted Saturday that this year’s midterms are going to be a “wipeout” for the GOP and that Democrats will win at least 25 seats.

“Frankly, it’s going to be a wipeout,” Carville said on Fox News’s “Saturday in America.”

“Your viewers need to know that the Democrats are going to pick up at a minimum 25 seats, maybe as high as 45. In all likelihood, the Democrats will carry the Senate.”

When asked about how they saw the direction of the country, 43.6 percent in the poll said it was overall going “in the right direction,” while 56.4 percent said it was overall going toward the “wrong track.”

The Emerson poll took place Jan. 17-19, featuring 1,000 likely voters and a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

New York must redraw congressional map before midterms, judge rules

New York must redraw its congressional map, a state judge ruled on Wednesday, handing Democrats another key opportunity to pick up another US House seat before this fall’s midterm elections.

The ruling from Jeffrey Pearlman, a New York state supreme court justice, comes after a Democratic-aligned law firm challenged the boundaries of New York’s 11th congressional district, which includes the borough of Staten Island and portions of south Brooklyn. The district is currently represented by Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican, the only GOP member representing New York City in Congress.

The suit alleged that the current configuration of the district diminished the influence of Black and Latino voters. Pearlman agreed with that argument, saying the district boundaries violated a provision of the state constitution that requires districts to be drawn in such a way that “based on the totality of the circumstances, racial or minority language groups do not have less opportunity to participate in the political process than other members of the electorate and to elect representatives of their choice”.

The provision was added to the state constitution through a voter referendum in 2014.

The judge said the petitioners had shown strong evidence of a “racially polarized voting bloc”, as well as “a history of discrimination that impacts current day political participation and representation” and “that racial appeals are still made in political campaigns today”.

“Based on the facts presented by the expert witness reports and on the record, it is clear to the court that the current district lines of CD-11 are a contributing factor in the lack of representation for minority voters,” he wrote in his opinion. “Without adding Black and Latino voters from elsewhere, those voters already affected by race discrimination will remain a diluted population indefinitely.”

Pearlman ordered the bipartisan redistricting commission in charge of drawing congressional districts to draw a new map by 6 February. In New York, the state legislature gets final approval over the maps drawn by the commission, and can draw its own map if it rejects two proposals for the same body.

Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, said Wednesday’s ruling “is the first step toward ensuring communities of interest remain intact from Staten Island to Lower Manhattan. The voters of New York deserve the fairest congressional map possible.”

Murphy says Trump administration ‘creating this mayhem’ to ‘take control’ of midterms

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) believes the Trump administration’s deployment of federal immigration personnel to cities nationwide is part of a quest to “take control” of the midterm elections.

“It has always been, I think, the fear, and now I think closer to the reality that the Trump administration is creating this mayhem, particularly in cities in swing states, in order to take control of the election, to say, ‘Oh, the city’s out of control, the state’s out of control, you can’t trust the state government, we just need to run the election in November,’” Murphy told host Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Murphy’s remarks come less than 24 hours after a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an American citizen, in Minneapolis. The administration has sent thousands of CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel to Minneapolis, amid a federal probe into fraud within Minnesota’s social services programs.

In a Saturday letter to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) obtained by multiple outlets, Attorney General Pam Bondi asked the governor to share state records on Medicaid and Food and Nutrition Service programs, repeal migrant sanctuary policies and turn voter rolls over to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to “confirm that Minnesota’s voter registration practices comply with federal law.”

‘Latinas for Trump’ co-founder: Trump ‘will lose the midterms because of Stephen Miller’

Florida state Sen. Ileana Garcia (R), co-founder of Latinas for Trump, blasted President Trump’s immigration crackdown, warning he “will lose the midterms” because of White House adviser Stephen Miller.

“I do think that he will lose the midterms because of Stephen Miller,” Garcia told The New York Times in an interview published Tuesday.

Though Garcia was openly supportive of Trump’s plans to close the border, she placed blame on Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, for the aggressive tactics used during the current crackdown.

Her comments come after federal agents in Minneapolis over the weekend shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti amid a protest against the administration’s immigration action, weeks after an ICE officer shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good in the city earlier this month.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Pretti “attacked” federal law enforcement, while Miller described Pretti as “a would-be assassin” who “tried to murder federal law enforcement.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday distanced Trump from those remarks, saying she had not heard the president “characterize Mr. Pretti in that way” and deferring to the investigation.

“Distorting, politicizing, slandering – justifying what happened to Alex Pretti contradicts the American values the administration campaigned on.
