BURIRAM: -- The story of an inspirational young policeman giving back to his Buriram community has attracted wide interest online.

The tale of deputy sergeant Apichit Phanthapratheep attached to the Muang district force in the north eastern town has been shared more than 40,000 times.

Apichit has forked out his own money - some 150,000 baht - to set up a school for poor and underprivileged children.

He has rented a two story building downtown and goes to teach during his time off. He provides books for free and needs to pay 15,000 baht a month rent from his own pocket.

So far he has about ten students some of whom live in. Most of the M1 to M4 students are the children of farmers.

They study for nothing - the only criteria is that they be willing to learn and are unable to afford a proper education.

He has named his school "Ban Sang Fan" - the 'home where dreams are made' and hopes to inspire poor kids to fulfil their potential and make the most of their lives.

He told Sanook that he had come from humble beginnings himself but had entered the civil service and gone through the ranks swiftly.

Now he wanted to start giving back to the community.

Good news..... Reading about stuff like this makes my day. Its a nice reminder that people can be kind if they choose to.

My bil is policeman in bang kapi. Always found him to be an honourable guy, and in his spare time he teaches the local kids in the moo baan to learn about fixing cars and bikes and quite a few have found employment.

I see this as fake news. Periodically we get this kind of story popping up to sway the opinions of the general public. Give them a 'feel good' feeling. This time it's the police, sometimes a taxi driver or taxi driver but always the ones that seem to carry bad reputations.
This policeman pays out of his own pocket 15,000 Baht per month rent. That accounts for a large portion of his wages leaving him not enough to live on if he's clean and not making more elsewhere. :confused:
He claims the children cannot pay for schooling when in fact schooling is free for all. And why his he allowed to teach these kids? Why doesn't he take them to a proper school and save his hard :rolleyes: earned money? He's not a qualified teacher. He doesn't follow the national curriculum. The children do not get a paper at the end that they can show to an employer which is required. Only a school can do that. Nah, this story stinks for me.

Don't they Schools in Buriram now?

^^ Sometimes, those informal schools are the only education that the poorest of the poor get.

Not true. Education is compulsory in Thailand up to the age of 16. It's an offence for the parents if the kid doesn't attend. Where I live in S Buriram any child that persistently skips school or fails to learn are sent to a government like boarding school and only allowed home at the W/E.

Just because its compulsory does not mean that everyone gets an education.

Its a great law..... But one wonders how effective it is when it comes to practice.

Take for example the law prohibiting prostitution.

It is in practice and the local boarding school for truants and troublesome children is in the same province as the kids in that policeman's story. Why he's took it upon himself to do something that is already there, free of charge, is beyond me. Why doesn't he just go along to the school, it's in Nang Rong, and do voluntary work. I'm sure he'd be most welcome and he could perhaps donate the 15,000 Baht he pays in rent to the school. :rolleyes:

^ I'm sure in a middle class neighborhood those laws are practiced.

I do imagine things to be way different when it comes to remote villages.

Then again GF, you seem to imagine there can be no more to this story than meets the eye.

Thailand didn't have a great record for free press even when it had a democratically elected government.

And as for the RTP...well...*cough*.

True enough Cy, it could be a fake story, a mere government propaganda, but it parallels a lot of lives that are similar to this.
