Red Arrow Jet Crashes at Bournemouth Airshow

A Red Arrow jet has crashed near Bournemouth airport after the display team took part in an annual air festival.
A Twitter account for the Bournemouth Air Festival said: "We are aware of the situation with the Red Arrows - will update you accordingly."
Police said they were dealing with "an incident" in the area although would not give any details.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) also said it was investigating.
Shaun Spencer-Perkins saw the crash and said he heard "a whoosh sound, looked around and saw a Red Arrow flying below the tree line".
"It was flying incredibly fast, then it hit one side of the embankment of the river," he told Sky News.
"I saw part of the plane on our side of the embankment, strewn over a field.
"The rest was on the opposite side of the river.
"The crash site was quite large and there was a smell of aviation fuel."
Laura Goodwin also saw the crash, and said that immediately afterwards, she saw a police helicopter and a coastguard helicopter in the air.
She had been watching the display, and said she saw the red arrows coming in to land.
"One went one way, one went the other and then did not come back up," she told Sky News.
"Within seconds you could tell something was not right as there were ambulances there."
The aerobatic team was officially formed in 1965 and has taken part in over 4,000 displays in 53 countries, according to the official website.
A timetable said they were due to be carrying out a display at the Air Festival at 1pm before a flypast in Drimpton - a village in West Dorset.

The plane plunged to the ground near Bournemouth Airport in Dorset after a demonstration at the town's Air Festival.
Shaun Spencer-Perkins, who witnessed the crash said, said: "I heard a rushing sound and I saw a plane about 15m above the ground racing across the fields.
"It impacted and bounced across the field, made it across the river.
"Members of the public jumped into the water to search for the cockpit.

"We waved down the helicopter, I took off my son's orange jacket and my wife's red jumper to get the attention of the helicopter."


A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "We can confirm that we are aware of an incident involving one of the Red Arrows and we are investigating."

Since 1979, the Red Arrows have used the dual control BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft.
According to the aerobatic team's website, the planes' Rolls Royce engines produce 5,200lbs of thrust and give a top speed of Mach 1.2.
They have been based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire since 2001.

Red 4 I think is the aircraft, and thepilot ejected.You heard it here first.

An RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display aircraft has crashed after performing at an air show in Bournemouth.
It's understood that the BBC was asked to stop filming after one of the aircraft issued a Mayday call at 1.50pm and plunged into the ground by a river that runs through the village of Throop.

Eyewitnesses describe a dramatic rescue attempt by dog walkers, who jumped into the water and pulled the pilot out. It's not clear whether he managed to eject or not.

A Red Arrows stunt plane crashed at an air show in southern England this afternoon - with the fate of its pilot unconfirmed.
The Royal Air Force jet was one of nine from the Red Arrows taking part in the air show at Bournemouth airport.

The Ministry of Defense said it was investigating, but gave no further details.
Witnesses said nine planes took off from Bournemouth Airport to perform a display, but only eight landed.
Local resident Shaun Spencer-Perkins said the plane came down in fields, near a river.
"I heard a rushing sound and I saw a plane about 15 meters (50ft) above the ground racing across the fields," he said. "It impacted and bounced across the field."
He said two members of the public jumped into a nearby river to search for the pilot, who had ejected moments before the crash.
The Bournemouth Air Festival said events were continuing as scheduled.
The Red Arrows are famous for their airborne stunts, multicolored vapor trails, dramatic flypasts and trademark diamond formation.
Formed in late 1964, the Arrows have flown more than 4,000 displays in 53 countries. Their red single-engine jet trainers are a familiar sight at air shows and military events.
There hasn't been a Red Arrows fatality since 1971, when four pilots died in a mid-air collision at Kemble, Glos, as two Folland Gnats attempted a cross-over manouevre known as the Roulette at speeds of 700mph.
The nine-pilot stunt team last had an accident in March 2010, when two jets crashed in training in Crete. Neither pilot was seriously injured in that incident.

That's a shame. I imagine the team must have an excellent safety record, but when they do as many displays as they do the numbers are bound to catch up with them eventually. A sad day, but I'm sure they will feel that the show must go on.

Sad news. Condolences to the pilots family.

I just saw the Blue Angels a couple of weeks ago. They had a "incident" in May with a pilot coming out of a loop to low to the ground and where grounded for a few weeks while they investigated. Entertaining the masses is dangerous work.

Read the news this morning ,, all displays suspended untill futher notice , did,nt realise yesterday when I posted he was killed , looks like he gave his life to steer the plane to a safe area RIP and condolances to his wife .
