Eight students who had tested for a youth football team were confirmed dead and others injured after their passenger van collided head-on with a 10-wheel truck loaded with rubber logs on the Asian Highway in Surat Thani on Tuesday.

The seven other passengers, including a teacher, and the driver of the van were injured in the accident, which occurred on a detour in Wiang Sa district where the highway is still under construction.

They were all rushed to a nearby hospital following the accident.

The van has a licence plate registered in Yala and it was heading south from Bangkok, while the truck was registered in Ayutthaya was heading north when they crashed.

The dead were identified only as Prathom 5 and 6 students from two schools in Yala Muang municipality. They had travelled along with the injured teacher, Kumadee Dawae, to a selection of youth footballers in Bangkok.

They were on their way back home when the accident occurred. The cause of the accident remained unclear.

Over regulation in the West caused many of us to leave.
The continuing incidents of overcrowded buses, drugged up truck drivers and the me mentality of Asians wants me to ask the governments of sensible countries put some stick into the so-called protectors of Asian children.

Another waste of young life. RIP

How many of their children need to die before they react?

Perhaps it's not the business of sensible cultures to protect Asian children or revise their mind-set to mirror an Eurocentric design.

I am quite amazed that these type of tragedies don't happen everyday.

The number of unlicensed school bus drivers picking up our young people in less then roadworthy buses (if you could call these vehicles buses) everyday is quite frightening.

Don't the authorities know what's going on under their very noses or more importantly do they even care.

I feel terrible for the families of these young boys departed. RIP.

Any parent can only feel sadness here. Happens here in Canada on an all too regular basis. When it does public out cry and new rules and regulations. Thailand?

I think you missed my point mate.

I have seen men who are visibly drunk drive these vehicles they call school buses picking up young children from school.

Furthermore the vehicles are very often not roadworthy and never seem to have any adult supervision in the open rear of the bus and where the children are.

Only a few years ago I remember seeing the result of an accident whereupon part of a school bus roof cover collapsed with a number of children being injured, thankfully non seriously.

I agree, I see ridiculously dangerous and stupid driving every day here in BKK. But you said "I am quite amazed that these type of tragedies don't happen everyday." I'm saying i think they do happen every day, it's just that we don't always get to read about it. If that figure of 12,858 deaths a year is accurate (and many believe that's a low figure and 20,000 is closer to the mark) then at least 35 people die on the roads every day in Thailand!

Surat Thani - Eight people, mainly students, were killed and eight others injured when a van transporting Yala schoolchildren and a ten-wheel truck came into collision on the Asia Highway in Surat Thani's Wiang Sa district Tuesday.

Police and rescue workers reached the scene - an underconstruction stretch at the kilometre marker 237238 - just after midday to find the bodies of seven boys and the van driver. They took eight injured victims of the crash to the Yupparat Wiang Sa and Surat Thani hospitals.

Police say the van, carrying 16 people - the driver, teacher Kumardi Dawae and Prathom 56 students from Tesaban 4 School and Tesaban 5 School - was returning home after an audition for the "Dragon Nation Thailand" futsal tournament in Bangkok's Prachanivet Sport Centre. It collided headon with the ten-wheel truck at a road diversion.

Surat Thani Govornor Theerayuth Eiumtrakul visited the injured at the Yupparat Wiang Sa Hospital and arranged the transport of the dead victims to their home town.

While hospital staff were treating the injured at the emergency unit, the seriously hurt teacher Kumardi was so overwhelmed with grief and shock that he became delirious and shouted at staff members not to attend to him but to treat his students first because he needed to take them home.

The seven dead were; Abdul (no last name provided); Anhammin Waehama; Maruan (no last name provided): Anan Awae; Natthana Pendara; Hassan (no last name provided): Nasalee Hayinama and the unnamed van driver.

When it comes to road safety it cannot be over regulated and what goes down in Thailand is proof of that.

Many people do leave the West because of the rules and standards but continuing exposure to the shit that happens in Thailand makes one rethink whether it is really a good idea to bail full time.

I think not.

A brilliant place for a giggle but living there full time could possibly do one's head and health in.

Ive been traveling Thailand since 87 and have near on done the whole country using every conceivable form of transport.

I gave up using buses many many years ago because of Thai wankers driving with a death wish every time they get behind the wheel and the blatant corruption that allows this practice to continue unabated.

What scared the shit out of me was the fact that if you end up trapped in a wreck the quality of road rescue is no where near what one could expect in the real world and the thought of a long excruciating death entangled in twisted metal does not appeal.

First aid practices at the scene of a accident are also seriously lacking and I've witnessed this first hand after being involved in a head on collision with a police car in phuket.

Drag em out and throw them in the back of a pick up is the normal practice.

Road rescue is part of my core business, we have the best equipment possible to quickly extract a patient and strict road rules minimizes the damage, also our first aid techniches are world class adding to the chances of survival.

All these things are sadly lacking in Thailand hence when I'm in country its Train or plane travel.

I never want to be a road accident victim in the land of Muppets, newbies are at most risk as they don't realize just how serious this issue has become.

8 Students Killed in Head-on Collision in Surat Thani

Eight students have been killed and eight others critically wounded in a head-on collision between a ten-wheel truck and a school van in Surat Thani Province.

A ten-wheel truck carrying rubber timber collided head-on with a van transporting a group of students to Yala Province after a football competition in Bangkok.

The truck was in the wrong lane when it crashed into the van between the 237 kilometer and 238 kilometer markers on Highway 41 in the area of Viengsa District of Surat Thani Province.


Eight students were killed on the spot, while eight others were critically injured.

Those in critical condition are under doctors' care at Viengsa Hospital, while others who sustained minor injuries are being treated at Surat Thani Hospital.

Following the accident, Surat Thani Provincial Governor Teerayudh Iamtrakul, along with local authority officials, visited the victims at Viengsa Hospital to offer moral support.

He said the provincial authority will take care of transporting the bodies of the deceased victims' homes immediately for funeral rites.
