Eight students killed in collision
Eight students who had tested for a youth football team were confirmed dead and others injured after their passenger van collided head-on with a 10-wheel truck loaded with rubber logs on the Asian Highway in Surat Thani on Tuesday.
The seven other passengers, including a teacher, and the driver of the van were injured in the accident, which occurred on a detour in Wiang Sa district where the highway is still under construction.
They were all rushed to a nearby hospital following the accident.
The van has a licence plate registered in Yala and it was heading south from Bangkok, while the truck was registered in Ayutthaya was heading north when they crashed.
The dead were identified only as Prathom 5 and 6 students from two schools in Yala Muang municipality. They had travelled along with the injured teacher, Kumadee Dawae, to a selection of youth footballers in Bangkok.
They were on their way back home when the accident occurred. The cause of the accident remained unclear.
