Tonight beer review

So after last night experimenting with the herbs and being a little "hard on the Beaver" I'm indulging in some fancy pants beer.

First is the Krombacher Wheat beer.

Mighty good stuff, kinda pricey at 128 baht 500ml bottle from Carefour, but it's definately an equal to the fancy wheat beer from the HoB on Thonglo 16.
I rate it tip top and well worth the price.

Next just for curiosity I tried the Kombacher Pils

Good head, pleasant hoppy taste, light body, for a 4.8% beer it is a pleasant change from the usual virtually undrinkable Thai beer. At 108 baht a 500ml can still isn't exactly cheap. In Germany it's probably viewed as Old Milwaukee is in the USA.

I rate it medium and ok for the price, especially if you're getting sick of Thai beer.

I drink this when I get a chance. It can be picked up at Rimping here in Chiang Mai for about 140 baht for a 500ml bottle, but well worth it.

^ A local bar does that brand. They do a sensible, tastier one at around 5% as well. 99% of beers over 5% taste like shit.

Yeah. That's the "weissbier" (sp?) light-coloured stuff. Very nice indeed, too.

Most locales that stock this also have the "Erdinger" and "Paulener" brands too. Both of which are excellent.

Also, I must say that Earl is a bit of a lightweight. 2 beers and he passed out.

Krombacher Weizen is new. Krombacher Pils is the established, 'premium' beer.

Can be grouped in the same price category as Warsteiner or Beck's in Germany.

Weissbier does not actually mean it's a light coloured beer, it's just the Bavarian name for a Weizenbier, a wheat beer. So you can get light and dark Weissbiers. I prefer the dark ones with the yeast residue still in the bottle. When the beer has beenm nearly poured out completely you shake the bottle (or roll it on the table) to mix up the yeast and then you pour that into the glass. The beer will become slightly opaque.

There are also Kristallweizen, these don't have any yeast residue in the bottle, the beer remains clear, hence Kristall.

Very nice medium golden brown ale with frothy head and deep hoppy flavour. Head and shoulders above the usual Aussie piss. The so called 'premium' aussie beers (Crown, Hahn, Cascade) are a waste of money - tase identical to standard VB piss.

This James Squire stuff is the real deal.

$50 a case is a bargain too. Single bottle price is $3.85

I used to drink a beautiful version of this from the Allgau - Hirsch Dopplebock - no one can make beer like this, except maybe the Americans and their Coors Lite?

Another great Allgau beer was Zotler Gold, 1.5 Pfeniggs a bottle 5.0% Brewed in Sonthofen.

The "reinheitsgebot" should be passed as LAW into every beer making nation!

I brought a case of Thirsty Beaver to a party in the Okanagan Valley in BC, Canada once.
Don't know beer from shinola, unlike my brother who was offered a brewmaster's job at Molsons.
But, the Thirsty Beaver really went over well. It's from one of the many micro-breweries that exist there.
Their sales went up about 50% once they changed their name to 'the beaver.'

I agree it is a good bottled beer. I buy it as well when I visit Kelowna a couple of times each year. Unfortunately it is a 1500km drive. The local Government Liquor stores offer some options in beer, but the price tends to be up there with a good scotch.

Didn't know they had changed their name. The nearest "Pop Shop" is 107Km away so once you get the thirst, it can be difficult to quench:)

Nope? Thirsty Beaver do 2 beers a dark and an amber, I like the Amber best. I was enjoying it 2 weeks ago in Kelowna. Had a bash until the wee hours and then drove the 1500k back home the Sunday. Good job I am still young:)

I recall drinking bottles of this brew that was something like 17% Alcohol - each bottle was numbered, it was a killer!
