Prasobsuk: Won’t seek re-appointment
A source close to the senate speaker said Mr Prasobsuk was facing pressure from a deputy senate speaker who wants him to quit before the tenure of all 74 appointed senators including Mr Prasobsuk ends on Feb 18.
The source said the deputy senate speaker believed it would be easier for him to lobby for support to be speaker from current senators before their tenure ends than seek support from the new set of 74 appointed senators.
Mr Prasobsuk said he would not seek re-appointment as a senator, according to the source.
Mr Prasobsuk said he would decide whether to resign by the end of the month.
He added some senators had asked him to stay on.
Mr Prasobsuk said he must take into account who was likely to do the job if he quits and parliament is dissolved after his resignation.
At least 60 appointed senators were likely to seek re-appointment among the incoming batch.
However, they have not yet resigned from their posts, Mr Prasobsuk said.
Other appointed senators were likely to stay on until their tenure ends, he said.
The constitution states that appointed senators who have completed their tenure may not be able to serve as senators in the next term.
Those outgoing senators may apply for posts as appointed senators again later, however.
For this reason, it was widely anticipated that many appointed senators will resign before their tenure ends in order to get around the ban of serving two terms back to back. This is so they can be considered for posts as appointed senators in the next term.
Mr Prasobsuk said any resignations would not affect the constitutional amendments now before parliament.
