Religion of Peace Strikes in Thailand despite PM'S Apology.

Suspected Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand have burnt down three schools and shot and wounded a teacher.

"The attacks took place overnight on Saturday in the Muslim-dominated province of Yala.

They came after Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, installed in an October coup, apologised for the policies of the previous government.

More than 1,500 people have died in violence in the country’s restive south since January 2004.

Three schools were completely gutted and a fourth badly damaged in the blazes which began almost simultaneously during the night.

A police officer told Reuters news agency that four militants had shot the couple and their daughter from the back of motorcycles later on Saturday."

I wonder where they get those numbers from because according to the U.S. government's counterterrorist agengy MIPT there have been 497 deaths related to terrorism in Thailand in the past 38 years.

I would say your MIPT is a waste of money and their reports are very old.


Since 2004 there have been more then 1500 deaths in Thailand due to terrorism in the south.

If the Thai government ever decides to deal with the Muslim problem, it will be "all over in Dodge" for the Islamic element in Thailand. It's only a matter of time before the Islamists make the mistake of attacking or insulting the monarchy in some form. That is the point that a bloodbath will ensue unlike anything that Thaksin could have organized. It's coming...... and the Thais may just show the world the only approach that works with these extremists. The really sad thing is the large group of peaceful Muslims in Thailand who will suffer as a result. This is what happens when the majority lets the extremists speak for them by remaining silent.

These extremists have had a nasty pattern of overstepping themselves in the past few years.
The decent muslims here really need get get a grip on these bad eggs for the exact reason you stated. Boy oh boy I hope it doesn't happen because the short term economic damage would be extensive.

On the other hand someone in the world needs to show how it needs to be done. I have no doubt of how protective the Thai people are of their monarchy.
Perhaps the extremists might be able so see how such an act would spell annihilation for them.

What do you expect 'them' to do? Join in the chorus of anti-Islam sentiments and start lynching suspected "Islamists" in the street?

Plenty of prominent and not so prominent Muslims in the South do speak out against the methods of the separatists, but our hatemongering members are quite good at ignoring this fact.

I believe the new PM's approach is the way forward, de-escalate the situation and don't punish the general population for the mistakes of a few.
Has anyone taken note that the apology is addressed at the general population, not at the terrorists?

Read up on the history of the region, and you'll find that 'your' approach has already been tried, it's part of the historic resentment of the seperatists. ;)

I also suggest you read up on more recent events, some are mentioned in the article. The authorities haven't exactly worn velvet gloves - hence the apology.

So? The us government has been known to get it wrong sometimes.

What I'm saying is I think there's a distinction between deaths overall and deaths directly related to terrorist attacks. I've seen sources from NZ or AUS claim that over 2,000 people have died in Thailand.

Take for example the the soldiers who die in Iraq. Those aren't considered victims of terrorism.

I think the MIPT only reports victims of terrorist attacks. If the Thai government kills 80 people in the south those aren't counted as terrorist victims but as overall deaths.

I stated, or ask, on another thread to do with Islam: How do you negotiate with a person who believes it his religious duty to kill you because you do not agree with him. Of course, no one answered.

It seems to me that there ain't no solution. Muslims all over the world are the root cause of problems. Why not bomb the hell out of all Muslims? Would that solve the problem?

By the way, what do you expect from moderate Muslims - get on the streets with arms and kill all those who look like terrorists? How could one differentiate between a moderate and extremist Muslim?

Moderate Muslim's are really afraid to really speak up. That seems to be the problem, or they don't speak up forcefully because they really believe in what the terrorist are doing, but would never admit to it.

Suggest what moderate Muslims like myself should do.

All people have a right to exist on this earth. No one should be killed because he has a different belief than a Muslim.

200,000 people have died in the streets of the U.S. over the past 10 years. 60,000 Thais have died due to being murdered in the past decade.

And yet the rarity of a Muslim killing someone makes front page news and entire militiaries are mobilized to fight the 'problem.'

It seems to me that the priorities are severly misplaced.
