Fresh Oysters?

Have had a hankering to do a fresh oyster roast.

Being from Florida, well, I used to eat lots & lots of oysters & I miss 'em.

I know lots of folks like them raw, which ain't bad, but I like to toss them onto a grill & snatch 'em off as soon as they pop open.

Plop them onto a saltine cracker with some (US style) cocktail sauce & Crystal hot sauce, or just dipped in butter first........

Take turns with 3 or 4 people, with one popping them open as fast as they can go & the other 2 or 3 eating as fast as they can go.

We used to get them in 100 lb sacks in St. Augustine......200 lbs for $50 USD back when I was a kid.

I know I'm good for 4 dozen once I get started.

These puppies are EXPENSIVE in restaurants at 40-50 baht each here in Pattaya........no crackers & that nuclear lime juice/pepper sauce. They always come raw & give me the squirts as well.

I saw some that were already shelled at the Naklua fish market at 50 baht a bag that had at least a dozen in each bag.

Tells me they aren't that rare & might be available for a lot less than the restaurant prices.

They didn't look too fresh though.

Does anybody have any idea where to buy fresh oysters in the shell at a reasonable price?

Head down south on the Gulf side and you should be able to find them quite easily and inexpensively. Not sure about Bangkok.

I saw someone die from eating raw oysters.

Better off cooking them , do people realize these are basically filters sitting around the bottom of ocean bays. Collecting every toxin and bits of floating turd.

Try going to Sattahip out on Samaesan peninsula on the way to the port. From Patters, go South on Suk (3). Turn left onto 332 and head South toward Sattahip. At the major intersection of Suk (3) at Kilo Sip (10), continue straight out onto the Samersan peninsula towards the port. At approximately the 5 kilo point from Kilo Sip, there is a left hand turn out onto/into Samersan. Take that left and proceed about 3 kilo. There is a fresh seafood market on the left side. Oysters already shucked, may be able to purchase some in the shells, other shelled items, rock lobster, hard shelled crabs, squid, fish, shrimp,,, all fresh from the fishing boats. Or, PM me when your thinking about coming down and I'll meet up and get you there.

Not your side of Thailand I realise but - coming South from Ranong to Phuket at about the 235 km to Phuket milestone there is an oyster farm / roadside stall where you can get the best I have ever tasted - straight from the water - on the string they were grown on - all alive - at between 5 and 10 Baht each !! Never had a bad one !
When I was doing the Phuket -Ranong visa run we used to stop on the way to Ranong to place the order and collect them, on ice, on the way back - also had big Mud crabs at about 50 baht each !

I found them in Naklua market last weekend.

GIANT buggers at 25 baht a piece, so I just grabbed a dozen & it was plenty.

They weren't nearly as salty as the ones I used to get in Florida, but that was easily repaired with the salt shaker. WOW! They were good!

My wife grabbed a kilo of mussels (40 baht) & was quite happy with that.

Next time though, I think I'll wait till the sun goes down & all the flies go to sleep as they just about carried us away.

I always head to a 'raw bar' with my brother when I'm in New York- it gets pricier every year- couple dozen 'little necks' (clams) and a few beers is well over $100 these days.

I love to eat eat raw oysters in Oz, but I wouldn't trust Thai oysters.

Thought you might be familiar with the area..... as delivery is not an option and the directions are clear and straight forward, I'll lead you by the had and provide you with the GPS coordinates nect time I'm out that way. Maybe even a Google Map shot also.

Nothing better than grid co-ordinates.

I murdered another dozen from Naklua recently.

Boiled in their own juices on the grill, so far no digestive issues at all.
