When and how does a tree become a shrine

Just down the road from me i noticed a small gathering of about 5 people hanging coloured ribbons around a tree outside a 108 shop in Sathupradit. Slowly the number have started to increase, and now, particularly at the weekends there are at least 200 people or more to the extent that half of the crowd branches half the way into the road. (Accident waiting to happen)

What muppet spreads the rumour that the tree gave them the lottery number or other ridiculous claims. Or was this a joint business venture of the 3 0r 4 stalls that have since set up there selling flowers.

What is it with religion and other ridiculous faiths that make these people form a pilgrimage?

Most of em are nuts, I know that does not go into detail, but what can you say when people are nuts.

have you checked whether or not the local council are planning to cut the tree down? That's the main sensible reason for people doing this, holy trees can't be cut down. Sometimes people go as far as ordaining the tree. We have lots of those in Chiang Mai, strategically placed in the middle of the road where they can feed on the souls of drivers who crash into them.

Given that, odds are that you're right about people thinking it's magically producing lottery numbers. Why don't you ask them?

True, remember about 3 yrs ago they wanted to cut down all those majestic trees on the CM to Lamphun road. It got the go ahead so the locals simply tied the orange cloth around them and then everybody refused to be the one to cut them down. Problem solved.

Accept for the multitudes who drive into them of course.

Maybe it's a Takian or Po tree?

Usually when some oxygen thief embeds himself and his vehicle into it. Then they thank the spirits for removing yet another twat from the road.

about 10 years ago, some one walked by one of the big trees on Suan Plu, right at the walkway entrance into the Shell station and the tree told them the winning numbers for the lottery that night. Two weeks later at the next drawing, there was over a hundred people making merit trying to get the tree to talk again. For several months, there would be hundreds of people there every lottery day.

It has now died down, but the tree is still covered with cloth and stuff.

Do the tree spirits reside exclusively in trees?

Would they be inclined to inhabit Doraemon toys for a bit of a change?
