The parent company still flies one flight every day; a ratty old 747 that goes to Hong Kong and back. No thanks, I flew on a brand new A320 with Air Asia and felt a whole lot safer.

Had loads of hassle with AirAsia admin, but must say every trip has been ploplem free.

Christy - thanks for posting the link to the crash report.

To save others from reading through the complete report, (which I've just done), the very general conclusion is that the accident was due to pilot error.

The pilot/co-pilot started to execute a go-around procedure, but omitted to activate the TO/GA switch, which is a neccessary requirement in order to obtain the neccessary throttle power for the go-around. Therefore, the plane lost altitude and hit the deck.

(My technical knowledge of aircraft is limited to operating the toilet paper dispensers, so please forgive me if my interpretation is not totally correct).

The report also highlights the fact that the copilot who was flying the plane tried to hand over control to the pilot in the middle of the aborted landing - perhaps he couldn't figure out why the throttle up wasn't working?

The crash report also states that based upon evidence provided from 'others', there is a very strong suspicion of falsified internal documents concerning pilot proficiency checks.

An important comment was that due to the layout of the drainage ditches at Phuket Airport, it was impossible for firecrew and rescuers to reach the crash site. It seems when the drainage gullies were constructed at the airport, no-one thought to bridge them over so that fire-crew could access the airport land on the far side of the gullies.

Oh - and the wind-shear system at Phuket Airport was fcuked

Oh - and according to other reliable reports, the fire-crew didn't actually have any foam in their rescue vehicles cos they used it all up the day before on a practice drill.

Oh - and according to international airport design requrements, the earth bank that the plane hit should not even have been there, because it lies too close to the runway.

Apart from that, it was an accident

The designers had no skills what so ever in Airport design, however their fathers had lots of money and the kids wanted to be architects...so they were..welcome to Thailand..no kids ever fail...that's the motto at my school..everyone of these morons wants to be a doctor or dentist...as it's a rich private school, they probably will be...Malaysia for my health and air travel needs please!!!!!!

What can one say it's all for show in Thailand...that's all it is. A big pretence that's all...looks good on the surface then you get down to the nitty gritty and it's fooooooooooked..

I also read the report and agree pretty much with Simon43's summary - pilot error combined with apparently falsified training records on 'go around' procedures.

But one thing I can't square from an otherwise seemingly thorough report...and that is the issue of weather and windshear. The report says it wasn't a major issue.

If not, then why did the pilots freak out and try to abort landing and throttle-up for go around? Also the cockpit voice recorder isn't transcribed - just excerpts. Don;t know whether that is standard practice - could be. But??

I think 1-2-Go has started up again on the BKK-Phuket Route.

There is a point during approach to landing in a turbine powered aircraft where you simply can't shove the throttles open and expect power... It takes between 10 - 15 seconds for a turbine to spool-up and begin making power... Any pilot who has a type-rating in these aircraft know this and act accordingly... Once you drop below 200' AGL, you're committed to the landing, come hell or high water...
