Toast (current version, 10) will do it for you -- but you will still need enough space on your hard drive to accommodate the temporary file. Just drag into the Toast window, select DVD, and select burn. It will re-encode into the proper format and burn the DVD.
Of course, you could also just use iDVD, which should already be on your system - no idea why you were trying to use iMovie.
