I've been busy and didn't see this post back on our birthday, but thanks a lot... It really makes a difference when civilians say thanks. Some may think that it is silly or irrelevant, but we really do believe in what we do... and we're happy to do what we do and see what we see so that you don't have to.
For those of you who don't know, my Marine Corps was born in a bar; Tun Tavern in 1775, Robert Mullen, the first high speed low drag Marine Corps recruiter offered free beer as a sign up bonus and there was no shortage of drunkards, patriots and misfits willing to go off an do their duty.
The nickname "leather neck" comes from the leather collar they wore to support their necks while shooting from the rigging of ships and defend against decapitating sword slashes.
The nickname "Devil Dog" came from the intense fighting at Belleau Wood where the germans called us "hell hounds"... 2 medal of honer winning Dan Daily famously said, "Come on you sons of bitches, do you wanna live forever?" at this awesome battle, where the French commander said to the arriving Marines, "Flee, this battle is aleady lost", to which the hard dog marine commander replied, "Flee? Hell, we just got here".
The nickname Jar Head comes from the striking similarity of the typical Marine's freshly shaven head to the jar he carried to the bar to drink his whiskey.
The nickname, "bullet sponge"... well... suppose that's obvious.
The nickname "crunchie" is favored by Tankers... cause that's the sound a grunt makes when you run him over with a tank.

Also for the record: Regardless of what you think of the Iraq war, I personally left that country in better shape than I found it. (though I personally believe that US forces should stay in the US and only go out if they are begged by other world leaders to do so... and then, only if funded by said weakling world leaders (UN)who require our services) If America simply withdrew all support for everybody and made free-trade agreements with anybody interested... America would be a better place. It's not soldiers and bullets that make the difference, it's GDP... look at China and the Soviets.
While I'm standing on the soap box... (addressing an empty street) Nuclear weapons are the dumbest thing anybody thought of and the US should make the only sane decision and launch all nuclear weapons which can't be recycled at power plants directly into the sun. Unilaterally disarming and telling the rest of the world to go fuck itself. I think Quark and Nog said it best in star trek DS9:

Regardless of what you think of a country's government you ought to admire those who are willing to lay their lives on the line from the Spartiates to the USMC for nothing other than their country.

Thr first time I met any marines was in Prague while the iron curtain was still up. They had the best bar in town, the Marine Bar in the Embassy grounds, just down the road from ours.
Nice enough guys, a bit thick . . . not the cream of the crop in the brains department but then that's not what they're for.
Yes, they get sent where they are told to do the bidding of their master . . . it's not always as glorious as we are ld to believe.
