i saw an old bloke here today riding a Raleigh Chopper (obviously the worse for wear) - got me to thinking about my old bike and how those bastards with Grifters would take the piss.
i still maintain that the Chopper was cooler......

Grifter with big forks on the front, now that was a bike :)
Grifter was a piece of crap compared to the Chopper ( especially if you had the older Chopper with the straight frame tube at the rear axle nut)
I would post some cool photos I found but i cant be arsed right now.
Mauve chopper - people stopped in the street and applauded.
Grifters always won on the high jumps, trouble is you broke a lot of front forks :)
Oh so a grifter is a rat bike.
Still love a nice compact, rigid frame scoot. Back in the day, we'd chop off teh fat bob mounts put a peanut or sporty tank on. Get some drag bars or flanders No. 2s (my personal favorite) a ribbed rear fender or maybe weld the hinge shut on an old dresser fender ut it off down in front and chop out a new chain cutout. set of upswept pipe with shirties or megaphones.
Man what sweet rides.... Some dudes did shit work, got it runnin & left it nasty lookin barely finished never washed 'em. Those were "rat bikes" or "a ratter" Still technically a Chopper though cause it's been "Chopped."
Later on the idea came along to use model "A" radius rods drove over teh rear legs of the "springer" frontends to make 'em longer. cut out the gusset at the neck get the rosebud fired up and piece of 1" round cold roll heat the neck and yank back on that bar Keepin' an eye on 'er show she'd track straight... Once bought me a Panhead had a 19" over front end, raked out about 1-1/2" Fuckin bike was long as my '63 Riv...
Bitch in town, but up in the hiway, sweet ride...
Later on cut the entire front of the frame off, jig welded on a new stock geometry section, stock length FE; much nicer.
^ sorry dude, your way off topic. Grifters and Choppers were bicycles manufactured by Raleigh Company in the UK between 1970 and 1985.
I have no idea what your talking about?
Maybe you can repeat it in English?:)
Choppers are motorcycles not fucking bicycles.
Jeese
Oh, shit I give up!
mauve chopper limited edition 5 gears lick that.
When I was a kid all the fat kids got bought choppers by their parents, they could never keep up with us normal kids on grifters though, I suppose the grifter seats wern't big enough for the fat kids :)
Was it the grifter that had the threee speed twist grip?
I guess they never had them in Oz cause all I had was a BMX unless you are all realy old fuckers and it was before my day :)
frankie , you will be glad to know that custom built bikes are all the rage in the states now, people are building everything from old school choppers to custom built boss hogs ( 350 chevy motor)

I had a Malvern Star Dragstar for years in Oz.
Ended up replacing everything except the frame from BMX'ing it before they made BMX bikes.
My favourite trick was watching the motorcycling racing on tv (remember the castrol 6 hr?) and then go out and thrash it until I fell off.
I don't think there was one weekend where i wasn't pushing it home broken with skin off everywhere dreading the scrubbing and mercurachrome treatment my mom was going to inflict!
