Israel defies US over settlements

Here we go again. Enough rhetorical nonsense from Israeli government on how much they desire peace. Billions of dollars in aid given to a country which has done nothing but derail any effort to achieve a semblance of stability to the region. Time for the staunch allies of Israel to cut them off completely.

"Israel has officially approved the construction of 455 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, defying demands by the US and others for a freeze on settlement building.

Israel's defence ministry announced the decision to continue with settlement building on Monday.

"Defence Minister Ehud Barak has authorised the construction of 455 housing units in settlement blocs" in the occupied West Bank, the ministry said.

The US wants Israel to stop settlement activity and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has demanded a freeze as a condition for returning to peace negotiations.

Israeli officials announced on Friday that Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, intended to give the go-ahead for the new projects before considering a halt.

Netanyahu's move is widely seen as an attempt to cement the support of his coalition government, many members of which are committed to expanding Israel's borders into the West Bank."

Exactly.

This is an utterly cynical move by the Israeli right knowing full well that Obama has got his hands full with all the ludicrous hysteria being drummed up against health care reform and the stimulus package stuff.

He probably can't challenge the influence of the mighty Israeli lobbying machine in Washington at this time and they know it so that scumbag Netanyahu pushes this through now to appease his extreme minority partners.

It is time indeed to force the Israelis back to the negotiating table, a complete suspension of aid until talks restart seems to be the only thing they will listen to.

eventually the US will need to stand up to israel, but of course this will be political suicide for whoever decides enough is enough. the only scenario i can foresee is obama doing it after the 2014 mid-terms....and unfortunately that isn't very likely either IMO.

can't wait for Iran to have nukes, so the balance of power in the region is restored, and those nasty Israelis kept in check

you are not making any sense, how can I be proven wrong ? Iran has nukes and it's a question of time before Israel realize that they have no leverage and will need to go the bargaining table and shut the fuck up. Regardless, they are screwed long term.

The world in a state of suspended terror for 30-40 years is not my idea of "working great", especially if with parties on the extreme. Religious fanatics with bombs postured toe-to-toe might not be so restrained for so long.

stability in the middle east is key for our economic growth, as long as oil is flowing cheap. I wouldn't surprised if GW Bush big plan was to disrupt the flow supply so it could create a supply crisis and jack up the price for his oil buddies. His nervous laugher at a press conf just before the war when he was asked if Iraq was key to "cheap oil" might have just revealed that evil plan of his.

Israel has been assisted by "real" men for far too long. The ME problem persists after billions of dollars of assistance.

The Israelis have made only one significant concession toward peace and since have done nothing but increase tensions in the region.

You and others never fail to take the opportunity to take a run on Obama. In this case make the Israeli issue somehow his fault. Nothing to do with Obama. The "real" men of which you seem so fond have failed to do a damn thing in bringing peace too the region in the 60 years Israel has existed.

The real men have left Obama with two wars and a failed economy to deal with. Obama made it plain he expected the Israelis to stop the expansion of settlements. Remains to be seen what his response will be to this news but at least he had the balls to make it plain to Israel what was expected.

As far as Israel bombing Iran, can't believe anyone with a bit of sense would support such a move including the Israelis. A can of worms would be opened that would inevitably drag the US and others into another war. Just what the US needs right now, a third war in the middle east. A region that ain't worth much in the overall scheme of things.

But then what? With nukes in the neighborhood all around (Pakistan, India, Israel) and the US intermittentenly threatening to bomb it, Iranian leadership could say, with some justification, that obtaining nuclear bombs is a defensive move. But using it is another matter. I don't want to see Israel or anybody else "dealt with" with a nuclear bomb.

There are emerging disagreements within the US Jewish communities on the level of support the US should be giving to Israel. Only a sense I get but I believe within the near future the pro Israel Lobby will play an insignificant role in US elections

From the Settlements to Iran & Nukes.

I don't see any progress of anything new in the Israeli-Pali dispute.

As for Iranian nukes, someone might want to start a new thread for "will there be an attack on Iran" before the end of the year.

We've been listening to speculation and "reports" about a possible strike by Israel against Iran. Will it happen? If so, when? Price of oil as a result.

Anyway, Israel will continue to build and expand in the settlements, IMO. There won't be Pali statehood, and this issue will continue for many, many years.
