Black cars and heat

Just following on from something I read on another thread about dark color cars being much hotter that white, apparently 8 degrees.

We've just agreed to buy a pick up and after reading about the colors I decided to go for white. However we've just got a call from the dealer saying the only color available is black.

This is top of the range Triton Cab, 2x4, but not the raised version. Apparently they are not producing them anymore, as the Thais aren't willing to pay for the ABS and airbags.

So I've told the dealer I will probably cancel, I've already given a 4K deposit, however I should be able to get it back.

I'm wondering just how bad the black will be, I may still get the car if the dealer can offer further discounts or freebies.

You could buy the black one and then cover in it baking foil. That would work. :D

More like the factory is idled becuase world vehicle consumption is in the toilet.

As for black, looks cool but expect the interior to get 10% hotter compared to a white. A study in California recently showed this and the nutters there were talking about taxing black cars higher becuase the environmentally unfriendly air - conditioning has to be run higher and longer than other vehicles.

Hardly noticeable with new cars, as the A/C will be very good.

Someone told me the reasons most planes are painted white was because darker coloured planes attract more heat and radiation. Don't know how correct that is but there ya go.

I hired a black vios for a while here and it was always fooking hot when I got in and also would show the dirt and dust 10 minutes after I washed it.

Yes black looks cool but is an impractical colour in my opinion.

From what I've Googled, it appears that it doesn't make a heap of difference to the interior of the car, certainly not 10%. The figures of 8 degrees difference seem to be for the painted exterior, they are also Fahrenheit. I will keep searching, black interiors are definitely hotter and leather/vinyl hotter than fabric seats.

I defy anyone to get into a car blindfolded in BKK or somewhere else hot enough to make any difference and tell me which one is 130 degrees and which one is 138 degrees? That hot is just foking hot regardless and you'll never know the dif especially the way they are all insulated. But in any case I always get a car of any color with a sun roof that can quickly vent the heat or can be left in vent mode to keep it cooler..

Probably not true re the only color available but matters naught.

I currently have a black car and frankly, if it is hotter than the silver one I had, it is not an issue for me. In Thailand any color and the interior will be damn hot in no time. If you like the black get it. Tis a pain to keep clean though!

I'm 99% sure it's true. Another dealer told me the model wasn't available at all, this model is 30K more and the only difference is safety features, apparently Thais have no interest in paying this - makes sense.

Thanks, but it seems to be pretty much focused on the exterior. The thing that really heats the interior is the windows.

The model is a Triton. The black looks nice, but I was worried about the heat. I'm trying to be practical about the purchase. Triton seems to comes up best on safety and handling.

We ran a couple of ex Army Landrovers in Sudan - dark khaki colour - no A/C in either.
One had a double skin roof with about 2'' between that and the actual roof - was noticably cooler than the other one.

We got ABS and I don't like it, especially since Thai built the fucking thing and close enough just ain't good enough for me when it comes to the brakes on my car, and I have notices that the brakes just do not work properly, and I do know something about how a rig reacts when the brakes are applied.

It is silver and when we had the mirror film put on the windows it made a lot of difference.

Any study is going to be subjective to the locale in which it was created... Regardless of what the studies say, a black exterior color is going to be much hotter than a white one... Having said that, I love the appearance of black vehicles and have owned several... I have also paid the price when sliding behind the wheel after the car / truck has been sitting outside in 100+ degree heat for some time...

What's even worse is dark leather / vinyl interior... If you've never hopped in a car with black leather interior while wearing shorts during the summer, that sizzling sound is your thighs melting into the rich Corinthian leather...

Buy the black one and have it painted white... Problem solved...

Black cars have more accidents due to lower visibility.

For those who just want to know the results of the test, I'll tell you. The glass temperature (which I assume to be a proxy for interior temperature) varied only 5 to 6 degrees between the black and white cars on average. So I conclude that the interior temperature only varied somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 6 degrees. The paint temperature, however, varied by about 55 degrees, which is ten times as much. So it is indeed true that black paint is much hotter than white paint, but the interior of the black car isn't that much warmer than the white car.

and what ever location a test is done is relative..

Yes I read the whole report and would don't dispute those findings.

I think it also depends upon the interior colours and the window tinting but agree with you also to ventilate the car also helps.

One thing for sure and in this hot season any car is boiling and when you jump inside and no matter the exterior colour.

Or only drive it at night.. :D

I ended up with a black Vigo only because the other colours were lame. Plus it looks much better than the others IMO when it's clean. I live down 800m of dirt track and no matter how slow I drive down it you can easily see all the dust on it. If you scratch it it will be white underneath and stand out like dogs balls.

I did want a white one but none were available when I bought it. As far as the heat I don't think it makes much difference I only need the AC on a normal setting. I do have good tint though and I find the windscreen blind things work very well if you can be arsed to put them up.

Mythbusters tested this, black gets much hotter.

I did see that bit, but I don't feel the temperature of the glass on the outside of the car is a good way to judge the temperature of the interior.

Surprising there isn't a detailed study easily available, but from what I read it seems the interior color will make a lot of difference, but the outside won't.

Anyway, we got a call today saying the light blue is also available, which is funny because this is the color we were interested in from the start and were told they weren't doing it in any models.

Regarding the ABS, BG doesn't like it. Anyone else have opinions?

ABS? Absolutely essential, you may not need it 99.9% of the time, but the one time you do, it will probably save your life, or somebody else's.
