Mukdahan - Savannakhet
I had a look at some of the previous threads in this section but couldn't find one on Mukdahan/Savannakhet and the situation on the new bridge there, the so-called "Friendship 2 Bridge", imaginatively.
The last time I went was about 1 and a half years ago and would be interested in any new info. Might be good to gather some observations/experiences of that crossing or area for all to see. OK, we are all familiar with the tourist trail up north with Vientianne and Vang Vien etc but what about elsewhere in Laos?
Last time I went to [Savannakhet] you can't use the 50 baht ferry anymore in the middle of Mukdahan, Thais and Lao people only, farangs have to go to the bridge and pay. There is a bus from Mukdahan bus station but only leaves at certain times, maybe better now. Visa on arrival is still possible there, easy. The bridge is about 7-8 km outside Mukdahan and you can take a taxi to the bridge and get on a bus, then take tuk-tuk on the other side but the Loa drivers know you have no option and just bend you over the table and take the piss.
I still remember the sickle and hammer flag flying with pride on the way into Savannakhet from the bridge, comical, probably the last country that flies that flag.
Any comments or recent experiences welcome. Bring us all up to date!
Sorry if this has been done before but can't find it.
Cheers!

I have been in Savannaketh 4 months ago. It is still the same, very easy to cross the bridge, no crowds at all, 50 baht for the bus to cross the bridge, 30 US$ for the Lao visa on arrival. Had a very nice meal on one of those floating restaurants on the mekong just opposite Mukdahan, nice vieuw. Price of the dinner for 6 persons and a lot of Beer Lao, 120.000 Kip !!!! I love the place, going back next week for make a new visa at the Thai consulate at Savannaketh.
