Koh Samed pics by Bobcock

Spent a long weekend down in Koh Samed in February with the wife and kids.

here's a few pics.

1. Close of up a lizard, taken with a 100mm macro lens with an extension tube, so difficult to focus, depth of field about 1mm.

2. whilst I was photgraphing him a preying mantis landed next to us out of nowhere. I was just about to turn my attentions totaking some pics of it when the lizard ran over and clamped his jaws around it's neck. I got some good pics of it until two bimbo's who kept going on about how the lizard had a sicadda (sp) decided to stop the photo session and rescue the already condemned mantis much to my annoyance.

3. He then went and settled in a bush, where I was able to photograph him again. the mantis was placed on a bush where it was clearly going to spend it's last hours.

4, 5 and 6. In Vietnam i had tried to take some pics of my kids jumping up out of the water, here are some more attempts to capture something of interest.

7. Apparently accorsing to junior this is a salamander. Very friendly, wandering around the pool.

I have never been to Koh Samed..........what was your opinion and I look forward to seeing more of your work. :)

23, 24, 25, 26 and 27. The Fire Men Show at Ploy Bar. Hardly men, one is as young as 12. These are really hard to photograph, I tried to do the whole thing on manual, which is difficult as the amount of light changes as they get nearer or further away. These are all taken with one technique, a slow exposure (between 0.4s and 1.0s) with rear curtain sync to try to freeze the action. took a lot, these are the best.

28. we went back to check the mantis had died. It was actually still moving 2 days later, but hadn't gone anywhere. Ants were busy at work.

Koh Samed

It looks like you have taken a few pictures in your lifetime. These were great, and very timely. My friends and family have decided to stay in Thailand for our school holiday and we are going to be on Koh Samed for about 4 days in April. Really looking forward to the break, the saltwater, and the seafood. Thanks for your pictures and taking the time to post them with the comments.

Like the fire ones Knobsky.

Tell junior it is a skink...or at least thats what its called in Oz....salamanders are actually posionous I believe, or some species of the salamader group.

for macro close-ups a ring-flash or tube is ideal in increas the depth of field

Its amazing how busy Koh Samed has gotten, 10 years ago there was virtually none of those mats over the ground for dinner, now you can barely see the sand for them. At least at Ao Nang (?)

The camera is the Canon 5D Mark II

I have 6 Canon lenses, probably some from each of them there.

The ring flash is great in certain situations, though I use a twin headed as opposed to a ring, but I didn't have it at the time, I was on hand hald at 2.8 and also using in extension tube.

I am no more that 20mm away from the lizards eye taking that pic. With a flash in place I would probably have hit him and knoched him off the branch.

Ah... a Canon 5D Mark II. I found it on another thread "Various Bangkok Shots.." Great pictures in there as well, clearly Bobcock is a very talented photographer.

Sheeesh....I think MonkeyNutts is actually Knobsy....blowin smoke up his own arse.

Knobsy, did you know that you can cause retnal blindness to lizards like that being so close with a flash.

Nawty, I'm not quite sure what you mean? 3 posts have been deleted, one a smartarse one-liner from Marmite the dog, my response, and your response agreeing with me. I posted the camera make before I had seen Bobcock's reply, apologies for that if it bothers you.

Yes. if you knew enough to understand the conversation you will see that I didn't use a flas for that very reason.

Llizard eye care is something I am very concerned about, along with the environment.
