I went to an elephant camp in Kanchanaburi recently. This was in the souvenir part. I have no idea what this is?
To me, it looks like a penis on legs, but surely this is not for the elephants pleasure? :scratchchin:
Can anyone enlighten me? Must be a Thai thing.

Yes, it is a penis. It's called a Lingam and is considered a good luck charm.
Most countries that have been influenced by Indian culture have these penises as lucky charms.

I nearly drove straight into a big wooden penis parked in the centre of a road in Trad.
The village head had put it there for good luck and pointed in the right direction and on behalf of the village people and so I was told.
Wonder how he determines what is the right direction to point it in! :confused:

Well thanks guys. I really thought it was something like that, but had no idea. I asked my tour guide, and he didn't really answer me. He showed me these slingshots that were in the shape of penis's, and said he used to play with them as a kid. I just looked at my friend, and we all just had a few laughs.

After I posted this, I remembered seeing one of these good luck symbols in Vietnam as well. I snapped a pic of it, because it was at a historical site called My Son. My Son ruines were Left by the Cham empire, a Malay people that converted from Hinduism to Islam in the 12th Century, they once controlled most of Vietnam.

By chance I have recently read a string of novels about India and was surprised at the degree of influence India has on Thai culture. For example in White Tiger one character gets annoyed at a lizard and screams " I HEA " at it which is a very rude word in Thai as it is "old language" and means lizard / [at][at][at][at]. And in Slumdog Millionaire a white person if referred to as a "fairang". Quite interesting I thought.Quote:
