According to this report, there are far less burglaries in Thailand than in most Western countries.

Why do people in Thailand then run around and fortify their houses with walls, fences and god knows what else?

Some reasons could be that in rural Thailand there is not much to steal and that is where the majority of the 65 million Thais live, another that the statistic material is very weak in this country with most things either not being reported and if reported not collected statisticly by the relevant authoritys where as other Country's is extremely efficient and if as much as a toothpick goes missing it will be in a central database within a few hours, but if you look at Pattaya we have on this estate still with all the security trappings had more than 10 break-ins that is between 40 houses so that would be 25% and most of them have not been reported to the Police, this goes on all over town, looking at some of the western Country's on top of the list there are rich pickings in every home all over the Country and the burglary's is being done to a great extend by other nationality's having seen a sharp rise with (gangs from Letland, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Russia and Romania) coming travelling to the Country just with that purpose, I would suggest that not many burglars travel to Thailand just for the purpose of making burglaries. Statistics is a tool that can be used in ways that do not reflect the situations correctly, the rate of burglary's here in LOS is extremely high in the places where there are something worth stealing and that would in general be where we expats are living so do not let this lot of worthless numbers on the burglary statistics put you to sleep you still need to protect your valuables. :)

Absolutely. When we got done I had to go round to the police station and wake the fukers up. Eventually 2 of them turned up and declared that I had done it myself.
My own investigation work (pawn shops and electric shops) turned fruitful as I found the gf's Sony and Canon cameras. Unfortunately the place where I found them was owned by a Bad Ass Mutha who was also a high ranking copper. I was persuaded to just accept the loss and continue along the peaceful path without making waves.
I'm amazed at the South African number compared to Australia & New Zealand. I honestly thought that it was one of the worst in the world.
I wonder how the statistics would stack up of light-green robberies versus the dark-green robberies?
And knowing that if you do there's a good chance it will end-up costing you even more money.Quote:

Stastics are meaningless without a context in which to evaluate them. Most important to know would be the source of the data. It's probably safe to assume that for each country the data comes from a Federal level organization; in America this is generally the F.B.I. or Department of Justice. So who provides the aggregated statistics for Thailand? And on what is that data basded? Convictions, arrests, reports filed?
As anyone knows, getting the RTP just to investigate is enough of a challenge, and their standard tactics when any real progress is made is to get the perpetrator to make apology and restitution to the victim and consider it job done, in lieu of any official report being filed or charges laid. So the conclusion has to be that the number of actual robberies is far greater than what is reported.

If you check out the number of prisoners pr. 100.000 Thailand has 340, Denmark has 72 wich suggests that something is not quite up to scratch with the Thai statistics.
Look at the murder stats, Denmark is 53 out of 62 Country's ( Thailand nr. 14.) and that of cause reflects down through other serious crimes, in truth serious crime is very little in DK, but the technology level is among the highest in the world so every petty crime is registered like theft of bicycles, vandalism on property, urinating in a public place aso. aso. all State and local Government institutions and most private company's (like insurance company's) is required to send monthly reports to "Danmarks Statestik" there all the number chrunching is done and not much is missed.:)
DK is number 6 in Civil and Political liberty's, nr. 7 in Economic freedom, nr. 6 in Gross National Income pr. capita ( richest people), nr. 4 on the list of the least corrupt Country's, nr. 4 on the list of most spending on healthcare pr. Capita, nr. 7 on the list of the most happy people in the world.
So you see if you had only looked at the crime rate pr. capita you would say fook I am not going to Denmark, and alternatively looking at the other stats. you would say that sound like a great place.
The resent political unrest here in LOS would if it had been in DK. already now been registered as tens of thousands of individual crimes some on the very serious lists, here in LOS it has till now barely registered compared to its true scale.:(

I hear of atleast 4 or 5 of the people i know in thailand being broken into and robbed every year. most times, the 'help' is suspected, as the burgulars seem to know exactly when nobody will be home, and exactly where valuables are kept. most times, even if it is reported to police, they are told that "nothing can be done", and that's the end of it....wouldn't even be surprised at all if no records were ever taken..

Despite having invested in an advanced intruder alarm system (all windows and doors, plus motion detectors), smoke detectors in every room, gas detector in the kitchen, external lights that come on automatically every evening illuminating the entire garden, having very little of portable value in the house (a couple of cameras and a laptop - which I usually bring with me when out) plus always having people present in the house when we are away, the insurance companies I contacted were still not able to offer a discount on their standard fire and burglar premium rate.:confused:Quote:
