New Years Day - the Thai way

An impromptu party at our house yesterday.

We have a 60 square metre kitchen with furniture western style, a patio with all sorts of wooden seats, benches, tables and those concrete jobs and guess what, they gather up some bamboo mats and lay them out by the outside loo and proceed to eat and drink right there on the floor.

Everybody had a fokkin good time tho, with all the nieces, nephews and and my Thai family.

I can't change them and do I really want to?

Only got people pics so not worth posting.

What was your first day of 2009 like then?

Nursed the wifes hangover all day, she's not used to drinking.:)

I know what you mean about the Thai style floor parties. I one took the whole Thai side of the family, three pick-ups worth, down for a holiday weekend in cha am where I'd rented a beautiful big house for the weekend which was not far from the beach. On the first day they set up camp for their all day BBQ in the tiny little alley at the back of the house with a mosquito filled drain running along the back wall.

Very boring start for me. Went to work, and spent the day finishing off paperwork from 2008. :(

My thought as well.

But on topic squatting on the floor it must be comfortable. My 88 years old FiL with heavy rheumatism in the Philippines did it all the time. So why not?

Mine was spent having a breakfast at the Dubliner then off to Roadhouse for some Golden Tee golf and more beers! Great day!

I think sitting on the flloor is quite OK when you have been drinking.

Less distance to fall and I can inform too one and all I have fallen off a few stools! :(

My Thai family do it all the time and I really feel it is because it is easier to share all the different dishes that they prepare.

Maybe it has also got to do with hierachy as well as when you eat maybe status cannot be shown.

Funny, after all this time I have never considered to ask as I have always frowned on this custom!
