My farang kitchen

Hi

This is not Thailand and I cannot compete with those marvellous construction threads I enjoy so much.

But maybe someone is interested in a europoean farang kitchen. So here it goes. The cabinets and appliances arrive.

The worktops, nothing fancy like granite, too expensive. Just ordinary laminated pressed woodchips.

At that stage the kitchen was so full of material that I could hardly move. Much was even stored in the living room. I started wondering if my floorplan was correct. All this should fit in and still room to move?

I did all the work myself starting with tiling floor and walls, installing the cabinets and appliances, and installing the radiator, soldering the pipes. So my wife had to be patent. I am slow but had more time than money. Having everything done is expensive, not like Thailand.

On the boat we would say you were "trawling" Takeovers. That pic of you on the ladder......if I wasn't undeniably straight as an arrow, ahem.

Anyways, homoerotic frission aside, great looking job and pretty cool cooking duck right in the middle of the work.

Nice one Takeovers, brings back memories of many 'happy' hours of trying to put many square units in a not square kitchen and make it look nice. Yours is much more luxury than I ever managed, in Blighty. Duck looks nice, we christened our first new kitchen with a take away 'cos the water was off.

You see, kitchen complete with rice cooker so that an asia wife can survive.

Two of the appliances deserve a close look. Here I go with number one, the pride of the kitchen.

This baby looks like an ordinary cooking oven. It is with all the nice bells and whistles. It hast the conventional heating system with heat from above and below (didn't find appropriate english terms). It is also a convection oven with circulating hot air. It has a grill too.

Those are the normal features of a good oven but there's more. It is a steam oven as well. It can steamcook for example those delicious asian steamcooked snacks.

And it can combine steam with convection heating for tender moist but crispy brown meat. When it's almost finished you can switch on the grill for the last step to perfection.

And it was not even excessively expensive.

Another nice item is the ceramic stovetop. It looks like the ordinary ones but it uses induction cooking. The best invention in cooking since the use of fire.

It combines the advantages of electric cooking with the best of cooking on gas. Its fast, heat on or heat off immediately like gas. But it is very good at low heat as well where gas some problems.

Maybe those two items are the reason, why my wife no longer wants to live in the Philippines?

The induction cooking range is even good for using a wok. The picture is of a very simple very cheap induction cooker but we use it now on the new large set.

For the round wok to stand firmly on a flat surface I added three tiny feet. It still works perfectly with the induction. The welding was done at a car repair shop by the apprentice. :)

Last but not least did you notice the frying pan in the picture of the ceramic stovetop?

Those are manufactured by a small workshop that is around for app. 500 years now and still working with the same kind of tools used then. They are probably the best frying pans besides cast iron. A picture of that workshop I nipped off their homepage, I think they don't mind.

That wooden wheel is still being used to drive the hammers.

A footnote to this thread.

When we decided we need a new kitchen I found a kitchen related internet forum. I got some good advice there and so it happened that we purchased all those fancy things.

But compared to what some people on that board have as kitchen ours is very basic and simple. Some of them spent enough on their kitchens to build a nice house in Thailand instead. We spent very much less than that partly due to doing all the work myself and partly due to finding simple solutions where the shops try to sell very expensive equipment.

It looks very nice Takeovers. The fact that you put it together yourself, makes it twice as rewarding. Well done.

Beautiful job Takeovers AEG units are very good, looking at your tools in the drawer did you use the hammer similar to the one the blacksmiths using? I am sure you are too much of a perfectionist to use one like his :)

The only bit where I think you went wrong was tiling before the cabinets were in, your tile height is wrong and you also have tiles behind cupboards which makes it a real pain to fit the cupboards and is a waste of tiles, apart from that it looks ok :)

You are an expert, I am not. :) And thanks for the compliment.

I wouldn't dare to put the tiles on after the cupboards are standing. Besides, I did the tiles 2 years earlier and put them everywhere, I thought they might be needed under any kitchen design I would come up with. So I did way too much, just to be on the safe side. I didn't mind because cost for the tiles are the least expense of all.

As you can see having the tiles 2cm lower would make for a better look. But there was nothing I could do about it. I couldnt put the cabinets higher.

Putting up the cupboards was not so difficult. They have adjustable fittings and putting them straight is achieved using a scredriver.

The worst part was fitting in the tabletop. You can see in the fotos that they are in a U-form and they come factory-produced for perfect connections. Fitting them into a room with not completely parallel and right angle walls including the outward step in the window area was more work than all the rest of the installation. I think even a carpenter doing it every day would get into a little sweat on that. I had to go through some try and error and I didn't want to spoil any part of it because getting a spare would take a month and would be quite expensive with those custom made connections.

You have 2cms of leeway on your closed in ends and at the back that will be hidden with the architrave, it doesn't need to be too exact.
