I have checked the threads on construction and cannot find anything on the price of granite.
So I decided to submit this one.
I am building a house in Phetchabun I was wondering what the price of granite is in Thailand, as I am stuck in the Middle East and cannot price it myself. The wife got a
Quote from the builder 100 square meters 1500bht a square meter = 150,000 baht. Can this be done cheaper or is this the going rate.

I think it depends on the quality of the granite. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they paid about 650thb sq mtr, I may be wrong though.
I think we paid about 950Thai Bht/ sq. Metre for ours, in the end, but don't quote me on this. Price vairies with colour but, if you have the money in your hand, it's down to the haggling.
It will be a lot cheaper going to a place and selecting your own, than ordering it through any Builder.
No doubt the dog will be along later, but I think 1,500 a meter sounds about right. Does depend upon the quality and the size of the actual 'tiles' that are cut from.
The problem with granite (and marble) is it's porous so stains very easily and is a bugger to try and remove the stain :(
I know marble is porous but never known granite to be, I have granite counter tops in my kitchen as many other people do. My granite is black but I have seen it offered in many different colors that could show stains. If it stained wouldn't that make it a poor choice for kitchen counter tops?Quote:

The standard gray granite is very cheap in Thailand when you start looking at different colors is when the price jumps.
It is very durable for flooring but make sure whoever sets it is very experienced and gets the corners flush and level with each other as there are no grout lines and the walking on uneven tiles will slice your toes open

We have granite tiles in our kitchen; they are not porous, are easy to clean and look great - better than any ceramic tile in my opinion
as has been said, the local granite, which is a a basic standard greyish colour, is cheap. Maybe from B800 up plus laying. Get the supplier to send in his men to do it as they are experts and do a good job, don't use your builder.
If you trust your wife, she should go to a stone shop and see the different types available, and the costs. Once again, don't get it through your builder
we found a pile of pegmatitic granite in the back of the warehouse, beautiful stuff, and the guy let us have it at the same price as the normal
It's my understanding that granite flooring is a lot cooler than tiles. Does anyone know if this is actually true?

No sir. Not confused at all. I clearly know and can recognize the difference. None the less, it might very well be that all I've seen in the houses in thailand where granite was used that it was in fact a lower grade tile layed by a non-professional. I maintain my opinion as I have yet to see a granite floor that I would trade for my ceremic tiled floor.
I was wondering when you were going to chime in Khun a. boozer... I would suggest to you that if granite is cooler than lets say ceramic tile when it is layed on the floor, the difference would be small to the point of not being able to be distinguished. Except possibly by a finely tuned thermometer. I would offer that if I were ever to have a granite tiled floor, I'd want to have the largest sizes as I could possibly get to limit the grout lines.Quote:

as for your comments SEATr, that is your preference and a tiled floor can be very nice. I also like large slabs, not because of the "grout lines" but it looks better, as do large ceramic tiles
my preference is stone; for me it has qualities that ceramic cannot emulate. In addition, when laid properly, the joins are hardly noticeable.
Granite i believe stays 5 degrees less than the ambient temp on average, marble stains easily, granite doesn't.
Well the wife went to the stone shop and said they gave her a price for grade A tiles of 1300 bht sq/m layed. Then she asked about granite same price. The owner said he had a better selection of granite than grade A tiles not a great demand for grade A tiles where we live he said. The boss (wife) then ordered granite.Quote:

Your price is quite high; I just checked and we got B850 a sqm, plus B80 a sqm for laying
that was for the local granite; imported stone can cost a lot more
Well the wife drove to Saraburi today and got a price of 750 bht a sqm and the builder said he would lay it for 60 bht a sqm. Asked the wife if he could do the job and she assured me he could, I will have to wait until December to check, or wait for the wife sends some photos.Quote:

check that your builder has actually laid stone before, and try to get your wife to look at the result
Once again Gents, to each his own. Sea Traveler likes ceramic tiles- nice glossy finish, lots to choose from etc. We've had our grade A ceramic tile for more than five years now. They used matchsticks as spacers! Tight grout lines. Despite really heavy use still looks as good as the day it was laid.
If you like granite....Well, I think the granite here is one of the better bargains in homebuilding. Less than 3 USD/ foot for professionally laid granite? Wow!
And you can get granite kitchen counters cheap, too. They do want 100 baht per linear meter to round the edges over, though. Seems it's hard on the router bits?
