Rescue a child....

Evening all.

Tonight my daughter and I enjoyed a wonderful performance by the Watoto Childrens choir.

They are from Uganda and seem to be aged between about 9 and 16. It was held in a school hall and it was exciting to see the place packed. Around 1,500 people and only about 1000 chairs.

The show was inspirational. The energy these kids have and the sounds of joy that they made can only come from deep inside the heart. These kids have lost their parents to Aids and if it wasn't for the Watoto Child Care Ministries would more then likely be dead. It seems the choir is a way to help the group spread the news of what they are trying to achieve in Uganda as well as raising money.

One song that they sung really touched me. The words went something like "who will hold me now I am alone, who will wipe away my tears"

What made sense to me the most however is the slogan that they use.

Resuce a child, Raise a leader, Rebuild a nation.

1.7 million Ugandan children have been orphaned since the start of the AIDS pandemic. This is just one country. There are so many people out there that are hurting in ways that we have never and will never experience.

No child should suffer. Ever. However, I watched a documentary recently about a married couple in Africa who benefitted from very generous handouts given from pop star led charities-25 years ago. This family ended up having nine children. Due to the handouts, all survived to adulthood, and most have since have had several children of their own. In all I guess this one couple who were helped have now increased the population in their village by around 40. So, what happens when the next famine hits? The latest batch of pop stars will be asking us to help 40 people for every two people that were helped before.

Africa carried on for thousands of years without handouts causing population anomolies. Is it the developed world's duty or sin to artifically increase the population of africa in this way? It is too difficult an issue to leave my place perched on the fence.

I never belive the subtitles on documentarys even when they are National Geographic. Listen carefully the next time you see a Thai one. The interpreter says exactly what the reporter want to hear and it truley twists the minds of millions back in the west.

I remember watching one about a thai village where they were interviewing a girl who was saying that "her life was very happy and the village life suited her." but the subtitles said that "I must get to Bangkok because that is where the money is and my family cannot support themselves here so I must go being the eldest daughter."

Load of crap! Now I can't even take seriously any of thier shows on other countries where I can't understand the original language!

Smegs right...also applies to his parents though a few decades ago....someone leant a hand somewhere, doctor slapped a baby perhaps, shoulda hit it a little harder.

I think it is a good thing that I have smeg on ignore.

Listening to the kids talking about what they wanted to be when they grow up made me see a little deeper into what I was witnessing. There was the usual bus and taxi drivers, a few Dr's etc but there were two kids who wanted to be the Prime Minister.

Lord knows that Uganda needs some decent politicians and perhaps this is where the next crop will be harvested from. I sure hope so anyway.

About 10 miles up the road from me is the Sarnelli House, a refuge for cast away AIDS orphans. Heart wrenching place that I visit often.

As they say, charity begins at home and people in Thailand have a good opportunity to practice that. Nice link Tex.

Of course another way is to sponsor a child. $45 a month to give a child a future is not really that much is it?

I would never give money to someone in hopes that they might care for a child with it. Especially in Thailand.

I would, however, donate children's clothes, towels, toothbrushes, toys.
