12 decapitated bodies found in Mexico

(CNN) -- Twelve decapitated bodies were found Thursday on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, a local official said.

Eleven of the bodies were found in Chichi Suarez, and the 12th in Buctzotz, a source with the Yucatan state government told CNN.

The heads themselves have not been found, said Yetel Castillo, from the department of communication for Yucatan.

According to The Associated Press, photos of the crime scene showed headless corpses stacked on top of one another in a field outside the city of Merida. Some of the bodies had tattoos and were jumbled amid blankets and tarps.

It appeared to be the largest single group of beheadings in recent years in Mexico, AP said.

The tactic has become more frequent in gangland-style killings, and the largest previous instance of decapitations occurred in 2006, when gunmen tossed five human heads into a bar in central Mexico, the agency added.

This really puts a dent on going to Mexico for us (wife and me), as we are in the process of planning our trip to Merida to look at houses to buy for retirement. Has anyone been to Merida or that area of Mexico, before? If you have, could you tell me something about your experience...as we were thinking of checking Merida out because International Living magazine has praised Merida as being a great place to retire to.

They are not the first Mexicans to lose their heads over drugs and will not be the last..

I have spent a lot of time in Mexico, and I would not ever invest in anything over there on that peninsula, Baja is a lot better and a safer place to be both from Violence/lawlessness and storms, or even the west coast will beat the East but I would prefer the Baja or over at Puerto Villarta, Guaymas.

BG is correct! Mexico is a country that has many corrupt officials and drug lords. This will continue for along time to come. To bad its a great country to see.

I was robbed at gun point twice on central and southern Baja while camping/fishing on the beach in remote areas away from towns, I was lucky that they just took money and moveable stuff instead of my pickup and my life as usually happens.
You will have no problems in Ajidos or towns and villages, but be in one at dark and stop for no reaon on hyways, but more tourists are killed and robbed here than in the whole of mexico.

I really liked Merida, it was a lot of fun

there were some worrying moments though, especially that time some men came into our hotel (the Hyatt) and took out a man and woman who had been drinking next to us. The fact that they used guns was a bit startling, but we assumed they were policemen. The couple were found two days later dumped near the road, having been severely tortured.

We liked visiting the sights and were only robbed twice; luckily they only took money and our cameras and left our papers etc. They did not even use the knives - I had been told by another couple that their daughter was stabbed by robbers.

The food was the best, and the Hyatt was very nice in sending us a doctor for food poisoning, so we soon recovered. We were slightly disconcerted by the cost of the medical care, but we were insured.

Altogether a great place, although I would hesitate to go there again. The anti-American sentiment was very strong so, although we are not US citizens, I would hate to be mistaken for one. It must be the clothes.

The food is a lot better, both in taste, more sanitary and better cared for.
The police are not really any different than here, they do not work for the tax payer nor believe in "To Serve And Protect" and want a few peso when ever you are stopped, no diff from here.
I lived and worked in Mexico numerous times and was married there once and spent a few years there after I retired and I wish I would have went there in stead of coming here, but it is to late to worry about it now.
And I have a few friends that have property there all the way from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas and some have been there for over 25 years, there when the Peso went to shit and still there.
Medical care there is on par with Thailand both in quality and cost, lots of Gringo go south to get things done that are to expensive in the states and, also go there a couple of times a year to stock up on prescription meds and I have also spent time in hospitals here and seen doctors here and I think that Mexico is better than here.
And you are not far from the US by air or car and a damn site easier to get home when you want to and for damn sure easier to get a visa or even a get a FM3 good for 5 years, and gives you almost the same rights and privileges as a Mex, and then you can sign up for permanent resident, can't do that here.
