The Motorbike accident thread

I was in a nasty motorbike accident this afternoon. Driving down a somewhat deserted highway on the way home from work, went over a bump that I hadn't seen before and was going a little too fast. Flipped over the motorbike, and I honestly don't remember anything after that because I was in shock. The motorbike was down on the side of the road, a few broken pieces which hopefully won't cost too much to replace. Cuts and bruises everywhere, including my lip, but nothing broken. I was wearing a good helmet, which saved my life. I somehow got on my motorbike again and started to drive home, but it took me a minute to remember where I lived. I'm now back in the apartment, all bandaged up (although it'll probably be awhile until I can kiss someone....hopefully not more than a week), and just praying that these wounds heal fast because I go to Hawaii in 10 days. But honestly, I'm just grateful to be alive.

Anyone else have any accident stories?

I had one but I was on the 'giving' side, not the 'receiving' side.
I was coming back from Sukhumvit to Rama 3 via New Ratchadapisek road and at the level of Klong Toey, where you have railway tracks crossing the 4 lanes road, at the end of the flyover, when a motorbike just crossed the 4 lanes.
He was following the tracks, no helmet, no lights and drunk (it was pretty late...;) ).
Could not avoid him.
He flew over my car and his motorbike was sent even further...
One nice pick up 'ambulance' came (how do they know?) and took him to hospital. I waited for the police, went to the hospital...
Anyway, to make a long story short, I was lucky, he was probably so drunk that he flew like a dummy, did not even get a scratch.
But the insurance had to buy a new motorbike...

glad to hear you got away with some minor injuries! What type of motocy where you riding?
Is this your first 'nasty' accident on one of them?
I've had a few minor nasty spills and each time it got harder to get back into the "saddle" riding them ... :(

Yeah, I have no wish to ride the motorbike anytime soon. I'll have to ride it tomorrow to report the damage to the owner, but I'm taking the next two days off of work so I don't have to drive that long way to school. Kids are on vacation anyway.

I was driving an automatic Yamaha Nouvo. I don't know what the cc is (or I just forget). This is my first accident. I've had a few close calls, though.

Yep lucky you, and clever ! you had the bloody helmets,fact of being bold does not make you wanting showing pretty face...

I got the same bike, a nouvo, full automatic, nice for the quick rides in the city, i stick the helmet even i'm not yet bold as you can see in my avatar...

Back in Europe, riding some more powerfull bikes at the time i was sticking to the gloves wearing aswell, if you fall, a reflex will be to stretch out the arms and get your hands rubbed on the road, nasty nasty wounds to the bones can easily occur... i must say i lost that habit over here,may be to reconsider soon...

There is a hospital up in Korat i went once to visit a badly injured friend, the room was filled with at least 50 people all of them had broken head, the neighboor of my friend died during my visit convulsing and stopped moving, i was near dropping on the floor, heat in the room and vision of all that.... the friend had 35 broken parts,survived but was 3 month in different ER stations around LOS...

Some times i ask myself if it is worth this few minutes i can save for a meeting in bkk by opting for the ride with the crazy bike i choosed once again...

dont worry about the few broken plastic parts of the bike, but take really care to invest visely in a good head covering shell...

That is the scoring area in BKK, not surprised he was "drunk". We had an accident there as well, left my gf with a visible scar.
Same thing, a pick-up brought us to the nearest hospital straight away.

How do they know?

I'm just learning how to ride a bike at the moment and I'm not really looking forward to the accidents I'll be having in the future because I know I'll be getting some whilst driving a motorbike in Thailand.

I had a nasty accident on my bicycle when I was little and nearly got run over which scared me for ages to touch a bicycle! Riding a motorbike freaks me out a little but it's all about confidence really, not too much but not too little.

You were very lucky durianfan and good job you were wearing a helmet.

I got hit by a honda wave when i was riding my dragstar 1100cc.

He fucking bounced of my sadle bad and I just fell off.

i was stoppping to turn.

He cartwheeled down the raod and hit a pick up truck. Luckily only his hands wer ecut.

I also smashed up by bike in Kao yai but that was due to over excitment

I have low sided (bike slides) sport bikes twice, high sided (bike flips) once and had a few other minor accidents. I tend to ride like an idiot but I always have helmet, gloves, jacket, jeans and boots on. Never been hurt yet though I was lucky on the high side.

I have decided at last to invest in a full set of motorcycle gear.
Watching the motorcycle grand prix's, it always amazes me that they can come off at 200mph, slide 100 metres along the road, somersault into the barrier and get up, brush themselves down and walk away.
Must be something in the protective gear. Don't care if i'm boiling hot.

There is a new style of gear that looks great for the Thailand climate. Basically it is a thick outer mesh over body armour. Supposed to be very comfortable in hot weather. Check a few out....

There is a new shop selling exactly that sort of stuff up here.
Trousers = 10,000 baht. Jacket 15,000.
Your link stuff is considerably cheaper. ( about half the price) if my math is correct.

Opps sorry bout the double post....be sure to get a good name brand. Some stuf is crap and will fall apart, I know guys who have had bad luck with ICON so you may want to look closely at any offerings from them.

I've never had an accident when riding (have I Pops?!), only a couple of minor ones as a passenger (3 mph stuff).

Kevlar jeans are pretty good.

A decent jacket. The mesh ones ar enice but way to cold in cool season.

I've got a couple pairs of Draggin' Jeans. Kevlar padded at contact points and look ok even when not on the bike. Obviously heavier than normal jeans but suprisingly not all that hotter to wear.

Had my two pairs for about 3 years now and wear them alternately every day and they hardly look much used. Normal jeans only lasted me about 2 years.

I recommend 'em.

I drive my 'motocye' in the 'mooban' like an old man.

Many many bike accidents over the years, usually all my own doing. Broken most bones and been in and out of plenty of hospitals. I'll not bore you with them all but the last one was a cracker. Was riding one of my bikes (Honda VTR1000) over on Samui heading back towards the ferry terminal at Lipa Noi. The wifey was sitting behind me so I'm going fairly sensible and not too fast. Silly cow on a Dream or something pulls out right in front of me and BANG, I hit her - she goes flying - wifey goes flying - I go flying too. Wifey lands on a sandy area on the roadside with just a few scratches on her arms. The local bovine breaks her arm and hits her head on the tarmac (no helmet). Me, straight into one of those big concrete lamposts. Result, 2 weeks in ICU (13 broken ribs/collapsed lung/broken shoulder and hand), wrecked bike but did manage to get a couple of months off work! Even now, some 9 months later I still have 9 broken ribs and Mr Doctor says the chances of them all fixing themselves are remote. Now I've been relegated to my Honda Wave, even though, given the chance I'd be back on a big bike tomorrow if I can only get the Mrs to agree! Ride safe out there - shit happens.

Me got a story.

I had this Honda 750 back in Pakistan and one of my friends asked for a test ride.As he was testing the bike we were at 120 kilometers per hour and my friend saw a car and got confused.He tried to stop the bike by braking as hard as he can and the bike slipped.When I opened my eyes I was in the hospital with bruises but nothing broken.My friend had a fractured back bone and the mofo is on a wheel chair now.

Am I lucky???

OK I'm confused.

Whose insurance paid for the motorbike?

His? Not if he was drunk.
Yours? Not if he was drunk.

Maybe its different in LOS (i doubt it) but if you're snookered, all bets are off when it comes to insurance.
