I have a Seiko Automatic (self-wind) dive watch that works fine as long as it's on my wrist but simply stops a few hours after I take it off (for the night, say).
I know that when I first got this watch wearing it all day would insure that it would last through the night, but no more.
Is it worth getting repaired? Is there some place that can do the repair and insure that the watch will still be as waterproof as it should be?
I had an auto dive watch in the late 50's, Bulova Chrono, but was having the same problem you are having, and thought that as long as I wasn't wearing it I really didn't need to know the time anyway, but eventually took it to have it fixed and was something to do with the spring tensioning, and it worked well for a time, then down to do some work at a tad over 100 feet and the watch picked up a little moisture, so by the time I was able to get it back in the shop, salt had ate the guts out of it. If you are in Sydney the best place to get it done is to send it back to SEIKO's warehouse/service centre. They do a complete overhaul for $70.00AU. This includes setting the timing. Best part is you can post it to them as well, I did this even in Sydney to save the trip.
I have two of these watches. I bought both of them in Sydney (they are cheaper here than in Thailand - at least with the shop I looked at in Pattaya) I paid $90 each for them and think they are the best watches for the money anywhere.
I bought the first one and after I realised it had no battery to worry about and how good a watch it was I went and bought another just in case something happened to the first one. That was well over 10 years ago. The reason I had it serviced was because of a scratched face which made the complete service with postage more than the price of a new one. So it's a hard call, if you like the watch get it fixed in Sydney if you are there - they do a really good job and it will be completely waterproof again. The seals on these watches perish over time though so eventually to maintain it's waterproofness(?) it will need to be done again....
but at only $90 for a new one, why bother.
I get my Seiko cleaned and serviced at the local watch place and the Thai guy is an expert. He cleans and replaces the seals for less than 100THB.
No issues with waterproofing if the seals are replaced often.
I have found a local Seiko dealer, so I'll take it in and see what they say. I can't afford to dive anymore, anyway, so I guess waterproofing is only fantasy issue anyway.

To be perfectly honest that watch is a bit heavy for every day use. It's the only watch I've got now, so I'm stuck with it. But, if I were buying for every day use I'd buy something a little less bulky.Quote:

The deal is i either get my watch fixed or i buy a cheapy for $99 and not dive with it.
I have a good dive computer so a dive watch ain't important so i just want to buy this cheap watch for $ 99.
