A fake Ferrari sports car made in Thailand has become the centrepiece of an exhibition in Brussels warning against the dangers of pirated goods.
The Ferrari P4 - of which only three were made, in 1967 - was made in a back street factory in Thailand and is powered by a Subaru engine.
The Authentics Foundation has used the car to warn against the growing tide of counterfeit goods.
It says pirated medicines and food pose a real threat to human health.

"I think this all maybe started with the DVDs and music being pirated and it has just exploded, basically, into something quite different," said model Yasmin Le Bon, an anti-counterfeit campaigner.
European Commission President Jose-Manuel Barroso gave his support to the campaign.
"It is indeed not only an economic problem; but a public health and a consumer problem," Mr Barroso said.
Authentics Foundation president Timothy P Trainer said: "It has got more complicated because now counterfeiters are into everything. Twenty years ago they were more into luxury brands and so on. "Today, they are into electronics, they are into medicine, they are into food." The foundation said as much as 80% of the pharmaceuticals sold in Nigeria are fake

That's a load of crap. There are so many thousands of kit car builders in the US, and some of them make great fakes. And, there's a burgeoning market for knock-offs or kit cars, which are sometimes not badged to avoid legal problems until after the owner gets it.

Thailand could never hold a candle to the hundreds of cars that are put of of the back garages in the US, not to speak of the UK and elsewhere.

Thailand just doesn't have the abundance of chassis and parts to choose from.

I feel happy enough wearing my Thai fake Omega watch, even if not all of the little dials in the middle work properly, but I would hate to stamp on the brake pedal approaching a busy intersection in my fake Ferrari only to watch the wind screen wipers come on.

The gas will leak when you fill it up (they never expected anyone would actually fill it up).

The steering wheel will come off at the first hard corner. (There are two lanes, what's your compulsion for lawfulness?)

The headlights will work for less than a week (who wants to drive this beauty at night?)

They'll package a car with a Golden-Glittering Thai membership for two weeks free at the next tsunami-ravaged resort.

Get one while you can... ;)

I have read nothing of this article yet, I saw the picture, and skipped all posts just to say that by the way the light is shining off the car it looks like fibreglass.

Completely true and what ever half a Ferrari enthusiast that might even consider buying such a car would take about 25 seconds to notice it isn't a Ferrari engine :rolleyes:... Just starting it would give that away immediately, if not sooner...

My feeling is if they had no idea what they were buying in this case they shouldn't even be considering the purchase in the first place, because every person they showed it to would know almost immediately what a fool they were..

Scamp it does look like Fiberglas, it might just be the finish which is far under Ferrari standards too even for the time, but it looks like the gel coat of a boat hull IMO..

Can you explain that? What is sooner than immediately?

A lot of people like the word instantaneously because of its polysylablic nature. It makes 'em feel smart. But it's really just a gussied-up instantly.

Directly and forthright don't quite cut the mustard either. I'm left wondering if there's a pause between present (now) and immediately -- that something might happen within, for which we haven't developed lexography.

In any case, I'm not sure its possible to do anything sooner than immediately. :)

I'm glad to see it because what I hated most about NASCAR (and there was quite a bit) was only being US manufacturers..This will make us raise our game.. I'd like to see a couple Beemers, a few Mercs maybe an Infiniti or 2 and a few others out there myself... I just wish Dale Earnhardt could have seen this because he was the first one to put his opinion in on this and challenge NASCAR to make it happen..

Counterfeiting is a logical response to market value of perceived wealth; rich brands telling us we must make the world safe from counterfeit Ferraris is a bit thick, imho.

Nice paint..Not surprisingly it doesn't look anything like that cheap Ferrari copy...:rolleyes:

JFYI the have a real Ferrari badge on the front of the Thai Ferrari.. :rolleyes: At least from here it looks real, it could be a sticker though..;)
