Similan and Surin Islands in Phang Nga Temporarily Closed for Ecological Recovery

Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation has announced the annual closure of Mu Ko Similan National Park and Mu Ko Surin National Park from May 16th to October 14th, 2025. This annual five-month closure aims to allow the ecosystems to recover while ensuring visitor safety during the monsoon season in the Andaman Sea.

According to Mr. Warawut Saengthong, acting chief of Mu Ko Similan National Park, the temporary closure is a necessary measure to maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. The break helps mitigate the impact of tourism on delicate underwater environments, particularly coral reefs and rare marine species. Similarly, Mu Ko Surin National Park will be closed during the same period.

The shutdown occurs annually, ensuring the preservation of Thailand’s renowned marine biodiversity and reducing disturbances to local wildlife. Once reopened in mid-October, visitors will again be able to explore the pristine beaches, clear turquoise waters, and diverse aquatic life that make these islands a top eco-tourism destination.
