Student hairstyle regulation ruled unconstitutional

The Supreme Administrative Court ruled today that the Education Ministry’s ‘Regulation 2’ regarding student’s hairstyles, issued in 1975 in line with ‘Announcement 132’ of the Revolutionary Council, is inappropriate and unconstitutional, because it infringes on students’ bodily autonomy.


The ruling, which is effective immediately, states that the regulation, banning the wearing of a moustache or beard and requiring ear-length or three-sided shaved hairstyles for males and regarding the use of cosmetics by female students, is an infringement of the right to bodily autonomy.


The edicts were issued without treating the best interests of students as paramount and may hurt the feelings of gender diverse students, which contravenes the Child Protection Act, according to the court’s ruling.

That’s going to cause havoc in many schools and universities. Thailand finally catching up to the 1960s.

The hair thing I agree with. It will mean reduced interest in classical Thai dance - in government schools only the girls who danced could wear their hair long.

Make up though is a different story. That has nothing to do with 'bodily autonomy'.

My youngest had a haircut last weekend. To my eyes it was a normal haircut, no crazy style or cut. He came home from school yesterday with a note saying if he did not get a 'proper' haircut he would not be permitted to take the end of year exams.
I wanted to argue the point. My wife said no.

If only the teachers would spend as much time thinking about the education of the children they are responsible for.
