Thai woman who fell victim to smuggling ring recounts ordeal in Georgia

‘Na’ (not her real name), a mother of one, simply wanted to find a second job to help pay off her husband’s debts and to care for her child.


One day she saw an interesting job being advertised on a Facebook page, promising high pay as a surrogate mother in Georgia.


She said she did not hesitate to accept the job, only to find herself the victim of a Chinese-led transnational human smuggling ring.


The recruiter claimed she would be paid 400,000-600,000 baht per month, live in well-appointed accommodation and serve as a surrogate for a childless couple from a third country.


The agent covered all her travel expenses, including passport fees and air tickets. The preparation process took about a month.


On August 30 last year, she left Thailand from U-Tapao International Airport in Chon Buri province. Her group included ten other Thai women, led by a guide. Each woman was given US$500 and instructed to show it to immigration officials when asked.


The flight stopped in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before continuing on to Armenia.


The group spent three nights there, sightseeing and taking photos. On the fourth day, they travelled by train to Georgia, a journey that took about ten hours.


Upon arrival in Georgia, they spent a night in a hotel and had their passports taken away.


The next day, they were escorted to a compound containing four houses. Na was placed in the largest house, where she found about 60 Thai women, some looking tired and others crying, expressing their desire to return to Thailand.


The following day, she was moved to a second dwelling, which housed about ten Thai women. She noticed many Chinese people coming in and out of the house.


The women revealed that they too had been lured to Georgia with promises of working as surrogates, but no foreign couples had arrived to hire them.


According to Na, Chinese gang members forced the women to donate their ova every month, a process that could be harmful to their health. Their lives there had become a living hell.


Nonetheless, Na refused to donate and demanded to return to Thailand, only to be told by the gang that she had to pay 70,000 baht to do so. She contacted her family, who transferred the required sum to a bank account.


Na was then released and returned to Thailand in September but, before she left, three Thai women asked her for help to return to Thailand.


She alerted the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women in Bangkok, which led to a joint rescue operation by Thai police and Interpol.


Na and the three freed women, dressed to conceal their identities, appeared at a press conference held by the Pavena Foundation today.

The Pavena Foundation for Children and Women called on the Thai and Chinese governments today to crack down on a Chinese-led human smuggling gang, which has allegedly lured over 100 Thai women to work in Georgia with promises of high incomes.


The gang also promised the women excellent living conditions but, upon arrival, their passports were confiscated and they were quarantined in small rooms.


They were also forced to donate their ova every month, a process that could be harmful to their health, and forced to pay large sums of money if they wanted to return to Thailand.


The foundation’s chairwoman and founder, Pavena Hongsakula, said at a press conference that her organisation learned about the women’s ordeal in Georgia from one of the women who had come home, after her family transferred Bt70,000 to the gang.


Upon her return to Thailand, the woman, Na (not real name), alerted the foundation, which then sought cooperation from the Thai police’s Foreign Affairs Division commander, Surapan Thaiprasert.


Interpol later joined the operation, leading to the rescue of three more women from Georgia, who were repatriated to Thailand on January 30.


According to the testimonies of the freed women, the Chinese-led gang lured women via social media platforms, telling them that surrogacy is a legitimate profession in Georgia and Europe and promising monthly incomes ranging from 400,000 to 600,000 baht.


Once in Georgia, however, they were confined in a house and frequently relocated. There were no surrogacy jobs for them and they never met any couples seeking surrogate mothers.


Pavena did not disclose further details about the raid or the location of the human smuggling ring’s operations.


She stated that more than 100 Thai women had fallen victim to the scam and want to return home.


“I urge the Thai and Chinese governments to take immediate action against this gang and to investigate their smuggling routes into Georgia. Many women are still waiting for government assistance,” according to Pavena.

Thai police to expand investigation into human egg harvesting trade in Georgia

Thai police have sought cooperation from Interpol by expanding their investigation into a human egg harvesting ring in Georgia, the national police chief said today.


Police are currently interviewing three Thai women, who were recently rescued from the ring by the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, to gather more details for a more thorough investigation, said Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet.


The foundation’s founder, Pavena Hongsakul, says that the rescue of the three women late last month was the result of cooperation between Interpol, Thai police and the foundation.


Information from the freed women indicates that around 100 more Thai women are still awaiting rescue.


They were tricked into travelling to Georgia, with the promise of high earnings as surrogate mothers.
They were, however, forced to donate ova on a monthly basis instead, which could harm their health. Furthermore, the harvested ova could be used for unethical purposes.


Accounts from the women reveal that the gang comprises both Thai and Chinese nationals, Kitrat said, adding that anti-human trafficking police have been assigned to trace the whereabouts of the Thai members.
