A decade ago, Justin Trudeau came to power in Canada surfing a wave of progressive adulation at home and abroad. He had single-handedly resuscitated the Liberal Party of Canada, which had been nearing extinction. He handily defeated Stephen Harper, the accountant-like Conservative premier whose quiet competence had come to bore his countrymen. And he seemed like the natural heir to Barack Obama’s brand of new liberalism, which was in search of a new standard-bearer.
Everything has now ended in tears. Today, Canada serves as a cautionary tale around the world, its international standing brought so low that Donald Trump thinks nothing of suggesting its annexation to the United States. Whether it is its failing economy, its collapsing immigration system, or its inhuman euthanasia regime, the very word Canada has come to embody the excesses of an era of Western politics that is now coming to a close.
For this, Mr Trudeau is entirely to blame. His boyish charm and colourful socks had blinded many to the reality of a not-too-bright nepo baby, the son of a prime minister who piggybacked on his father’s name in order to launch his political career. A man who spoke in slogans and governed in tantrums, whose easy-going manners hid a thoroughly nasty streak and lack of moral character.
As prime minister, he defenestrated his justice minister for reportedly refusing to look the other way at corruption. He seemed to use Covid to drive Canadians against each other, and look the other way while China was allegedly interfering in Canadian elections for the benefit of his party. He was investigated for conflicts of interest three times and was found to have broken the law twice. At times, it seemed as if every person running Canada had been a groomsman at his wedding.
But his most harmful legacy for Canada may well be his undermining of its nationhood. Love him or hate him, no one had been in any doubt about his father’s patriotism. But having told the New York Times that Canada could become the world’s first post-national state, Justin Trudeau did his best to turn his dream into a reality.
His government cheapened Canadian citizenship, systematically attacked Canada’s past, and did what it could to dissolve the bonds which held the country together. If pride in Canada is at its lowest in decades among Canadians, and if separatist movements are gaining in popularity east and west, it is because of the deliberate actions of his government, whose most fervent desire seems to have been to turn Canada into an economic zone, whose inhabitants were associated with each other by nothing more than the fact that they paid taxes to the same government department.
In December, Mr Trudeau finally overreached. Having peremptorily dismissed his loyal finance minister on Zoom days before she was due to deliver a mini-budget, he seemed surprised when she did not simply roll over and obey his commands. Even in defeat he could not be gracious, proroguing Parliament for almost three months at a critical time for Canada’s future instead of facing the voters, whom he knew were set on wiping his party from the map.
It was a fitting end to the rule of a small man, who through luck and unearned fame came to ruin a great country
