Northern Train Route Temporarily Shifted to Lampang Amid Chiang Mai Floods

On September 26th, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, announced temporary changes to the Northern train route due to heavy flooding in the region.


The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has shifted the starting and ending stations from Chiang Mai to Lampang until the situation improves.

With continuous rain and rising water levels, particularly in the north, the Minister of Transport expressed concerns over the impact on transportation. The SRT has coordinated with bus services to transport passengers from Lampang to Chiang Mai’s Arcade Bus Station to ensure safe travel. The SRT also closely monitors the flooding situation to prevent further disruptions.

Mr. Veeris Ammarapala, the Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, reported that parts of the railway near Chiang Mai have been flooded, making it necessary to adjust train routes.

Water levels along sections between Saraphi and Chiang Mai stations have risen to 5 centimeters above the tracks. This has led to a temporary adjustment for 12 trains, including express and local services, now terminating in Lampang, according to Veeris.


Affected passengers are being transferred to nearby stations for further travel assistance. Train routes will resume once the water recedes, with ongoing monitoring and repairs to damaged tracks, remarked Veeris.

Northern Railway Back in Operation as Chiang Mai Floodwaters Recede

On September 28th, 2024, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, announced that train services on the northern railway line have fully resumed after floodwaters at Chiang Mai Railway Station receded.


Suriya noted that morning operations returned to normal, ensuring residents and travelers could use the northern rail line safely. He also emphasized the importance of continued monitoring of flood-prone areas, instructing the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to provide full support for passengers, particularly in areas still at risk of flooding.


Suriya ordered the SRT to prepare buses and backup transport services to address potential future disruptions, especially for passengers traveling through areas vulnerable to floods. Extra staff and equipment will remain on standby to respond to any emergencies.
SRT Governor Veeris Ammarapala added that thorough safety checks were conducted following the water level drop at Chiang Mai Station and along the tracks between Saraphi and Chiang Mai.

No significant damage was reported, allowing for the quick restoration of services. The station has been cleaned and facilities have been readied to accommodate passengers. Northern rail services are now back to 100%, providing full operations for all train routes.
