U.S. President Joe Biden's re-election campaign and his Democratic Party allies raised more than $42 million in January and have $130 million cash-on-hand as they prepare for a likely general election contest against Republican Donald Trump.
The fundraising figures, released by Biden's campaign, were propelled by small-dollar donors giving money online, officials said.
“January’s fundraising haul – driven by a powerhouse grassroots fundraising program that continues to grow month by month – is an indisputable show of strength to start the election year,” Biden's campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.
The fundraising totals include money contributed to the Biden campaign, the Democratic National Committee and their related joint-fundraising committees.
Trump's election campaign has not reported January figures, but did raise $19 million during the last three months of 2023, down from under $25 million in the third quarter and well under the $33 million reported by Biden's campaign. Trump figures don't include related joint-fundraising committees.
Trump's campaign ended last year with about $33 million in the bank, compared with nearly $46 million for Biden's campaign.
Biden is kicking off a fresh fundraising trip to California on Tuesday. He is expected to attend fundraisers in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas before returning to Washington on Thursday.
Much as I hate the Democrats because they are corrupt and have sold out the working class... The Republicans offer absolutely nothing; they are f'kin abysmal. Thus, I hope the Democrats win big across the board (including the senate).
^Would be nice to have a functioning government again, but I believe (still early) the republicans will win back the senate and the US house will flip over to the Dems.
Although Biden is down between 2.3% to 2.7% (on average) in the national general election polls and which is a good gauge to judge how americans are feeling at that point in time it doesn’t mean that much because of our electoral college.
Wish we voted popular vote wins.
Biden and team should be able to convince voters in purple states (the states that sway Republican/Democrat) to vote against trump.
Just focus on fact that trump is mess and would make a mess of the country.
Joe Biden has spent most of his presidency insisting to Americans that the economy is on the right track. Poll after poll has shown that most voters do not believe him. That may be changing.
After months of resilient hiring, better-than-expected economic growth and a declining rate of inflation, new data shows that Americans are becoming upbeat about the US economy, potentially reversing the deep pessimism Biden has struggled to counter for much of the past three years.
But new data appears to show Americans believe the economy has turned a corner. Late last month, the Conference Board reported its index of consumer confidence had hit its highest point since December 2021, while the University of Michigan’s survey of consumer sentiment has climbed to its highest level since July of that year.
“The people who give positive views of the economy, they tend to point to, the unemployment rate is low, and they also point to that inflation is down from where it was,” said Jocelyn Kiley, an associate director at Pew Research Center, whose own data has found an uptick in positive economic views, particularly among Democrats.

If Arizona flips to the Dems the Republicans will flip the Senate with 52 seats to the Dems 48 seats.

Details: Trump's Save America leadership PAC ended January with $6 million and reported spending $2.9 million on legal expenses, per Politico.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley's campaign reported a strong fundraising month in January, but she also burned through cash.
- Haley raised more than $11.5 million and ended the month with $13 million on hand. She reported spending $13 million last month.
- The super PAC supporting her underdog bid also spent aggressively last month. It ended January with $2 million in cash on hand.
What to watch: Both Trump and Biden's financial outlooks will become clearer when they file their respective joint fundraising FEC reports in April.

Reality check: That group isn't remotely big enough to win a presidential election. He would need to attract voters who are more diverse, more educated and believe his first loss was legit. South Carolina exit polls show he didn't do that.

And, according to AP VoteCast, a bit over 1 in 5 GOP primary voters said they would not vote for Trump in November if he was the party’s nominee.

The ‘Uncommitted’ Threat Wasn't a Body Blow to Biden.
Critics of Biden's Gaza policy mounted a strong campaign to get Democratic primary voters to cast ballots for "uncommitted" delegates at the Democratic National Convention. They needed to reach 15% to get statewide delegates, a threshold they passed in early returns.
But when all the votes were counted, "uncommitted" had 13% of the vote – a message to Biden, to be sure, but just 2 percentage points more than in 2012, when then-incumbent President Barack Obama won 89% of the Michigan party vote, and 11% went for "uncommitted." The protest voters might get a delegate or two from the congressional district pool of delegates but will not get a statewide delegate this year.
Still, Trump got much less of his party's vote (68.1%) than Biden, who got 81% of the Democratic primary vote. That's part of a trend this nominating season, with Trump winning majorities in primaries but not galvanizing the party firmly behind him. While the GOP nomination is an open race, Trump, as a former president, is for all intents and purposes an incumbent, so his inability to get the whole party behind him is a troubling sign for him.

Joe Biden’s campaign has elevated Alana Mounce to serve as its political director, along with bringing on board two other senior hires, according to two people familiar with the decision.
Mounce, who has been serving as the Biden campaign’s ballot access director, will take on the critical role of helping chart out an increasingly challenging reelection campaign. Prior to her current job, she served in the White House as the deputy political director in the Office of Political Strategy and Outreach. Mounce was Biden’s 2020 Nevada state director and was the executive director of the state Democratic Party before becoming political director at the Democratic National Committee.
The Biden campaign also said that Roohi Rustum will serve as national organizing director and Meredith Horton will be the national director for voter protection and access. Roohi joins the campaign from the Democratic National Committee, where she served as the national organizing director. Horton is the founder and president of the consulting firm MPH Concepts and previously worked on voter protection for the Georgia Democratic Party.
“I’m thrilled to have these battle-tested operatives join our team,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez said in a statement. “This is a team with unparalleled expertise, creativity, and grit that will be critical to winning this November.”
The hires are further illustration of the reelection campaign staffing up in haste after spending the fall and early winter with a relatively small footprint. They also provide an indication of the states the campaign is prioritizing.
In particular, Mounce’s elevation to political director underscores the central role that Nevada — and Latino voters, who make up about 20 percent of the state’s electorate — will play in Biden’s reelection effort.
Latino voters are expected to make up a larger percentage of eligible U.S. voters this election year compared to 2020. According to an analysis by the Pew Research Center, 36.2 million are eligible to vote this year, up from 32.3 million in 2020 — an 14 percent increase.
But the Biden campaign has its work cut out. Polls show that Latino voters have slowly been drifting away from the party and towards Republicans. Biden won Hispanic voters by 21 points in 2020 — 59 percent to 38 percent — which was down significantly from Clinton’s 38-point advantage over Donald Trump in 2016.
Mounce’s move is also the latest sign that the Biden campaign is rounding out its team as it gears up for what is all but certain to be a tough rematch against Trump. Top White House advisers Jen O’Malley Dillon and Mike Donilon left the West Wing to join the campaign earlier this year and the campaign has made a number of other recent hires to its national staff.
