Standing on the Back of Baht Buses in Thailand Now Banned, But Will It Be Enforced?

A law published in the Royal Gazette on Friday (February 17th) states passengers are not allowed to stand on the back of baht buses.

The law also states that the baht bus speed limit must not reach over 60 kilometer per hour. If baht bus drivers break the law they will face legal action.


However, baht bus operators are not happy as it will affect them because of high oil prices. In rush hours they are unable to stop passengers from standing on the back of the baht bus as they are in hurry and agree to stand.

In addition, baht bus drivers cannot refuse to pick up more passengers. There were passenger complaints to the Land Transport Office before after drivers did not stop to pick them up as the baht bus had no place to sit.


The 60 kilometres per hour speed limit might not affect baht buses in towns but may affect the rounds of baht buses outside of towns.


TPN notes this has been attempted to be enforced under local ordnances previously but was not enforced.

They have not really thought this one out; have they?

^When do they ever? Fuck nose how this'll work out in Pattaya, its still busy here and pretty much every Baht bus going from Jomtien to Pattaya in the afternoons and evenings has people standing on the back step before they even get to the top of the hill on Thappraya road these days.

It'll simply never be enforced, unless a cop needs a very small amount of cash on a very, very quiet day.

So why not pass it as a law and just keep head in clouds. :D

Would be nice if they'd added "and not drive like c**ts" to the new law.

What an outdated means of transportation. You would think by now they could have switched to small air conditioned electric busses plying the same routes as those smoke belching, open air songtows.

Just another point to add, you'd need to be braver than Ned Kelly to ride a Songthaew while standing on the back steps in the first place. Put half a dozen people back there, as there often is, and you've got 400+ kg of human weight relying on the workmanship of whichever "engineering shop" welded and bolted that step together. No thank you.

Standing on the back of a songtaew is a beautiful experience. As long as you hold on.

Used to whizz down Suk 77 to and from work when I was a city boi. Great way to wake up unless it's rainy season.

Im sure it was great…until you come off. Like riding a motorcycle with no helmet or jacket.

I remember some bloke was climbing into one on Beach Road a few years back. The driver just pulled away without noticing.
He was thrown backwards onto the road, fractured his skull and bled out on the spot.

Yeah, we pretty much only use the songtaews for runs up and and down the beach road in Jomtien to eat out or go hit a salon for some grooming. Any further and we use Bolt. Now that we have the new truck we’ll be using that if I know we can park. Pretty sure Tigglebitties is gonna become a frequent dining out spot.

Pattaya inhabitants are somewhat unique in the modern world, it is perhaps the only city conurbation not to have a municipal omnibus transport network.
Instead, they rely on dirty, ramshackle, pig trucks.
And all simply because it is a corrupt, crony-run snake pit exploited by vested interests masquerading as a government.

Going off topic for a minute but if you didn't know, they do their own deliveries. The guy that rocks up with your food is a family member of the owners and he makes sure the delivery goes perfectly every time (unlike using Grab or Hungry Now or whoever else that seem to take delight in being late or fucking it up).

And there’s the rub. Parking and driving in core commercial hours are dreadful here given the shortsightedness of the chickenheads in their urban development. But then, planning and Thai is of course oxymoronic. Most use small motorcycles as a consequence. Pattaya is a mess again now we are back to full tourist mode.
