I've been down south many times and liked it a lot. I'm now missing the those sandy beaches with loads of stylish tarts, blue seas and the remarkable landscapes.
A friend came back from Koh Chang recently and suggested I should visit. He didn't give any further detail about the place as he went back to the airport to catch his flight back home.
So if you had to visit, lets say for two weeks, one of the islands where would you park your arse and why?
I like one island in the Koh Chang group, but it is fairly primitive
you get a garden shed on stilts and share the toilets/showers
but it is peaceful, nice beach, some good people and food
very laid back
Phuket is too big for me, and a bit crowded
Phuket is just another cesspit full of beatniks and other freaks. Koh Chang is alright, as long as you don't mind the lack of facilities and mainly crap restaurants, though there are a couple of ok seafood restaurants.

23 years ago I stayed 3 months on Samui without leaving Chaweng. Couldnt do that now though. I would go ro Raillay Bay not an island but still remote and no cars. Has a very Rasta vibe that I like, plus great rock climbing and sea kayaking.

Get up smoke a joint walk across the grass to my friends restaurant. Smoke a joint play with my monkey (a real monkey) eat food read books get stoned and play with my monkey
I never left the one area I lived in for over three months - never even visited other beaches.
Never smoke to anybody unless they were in the restaurant.
Met one guy every morning for a month in the restaurant and got wasted with him everyday, played backgammon with him and hung out with the monkey - we were monkey dads.
Fuck I miss her.
I think I have a photo of her somewhere.

Koh Chang, I stayed there for 5 days. It's lovely and I stayed in a resort which was a real paradise for me.
We promised to go back there again but it will never happen anymore.
why not GoW? and which resort was it?
This is Fanta
She was a MAcaque who was found abandoned by my friend at she side of the road she thought that her mother had been eaten.
Unfortunately I have no photos on my computer of Fanta when she was only a few months old but she was gorgeous.
I had to leave Ko Chang and go make some money so my friend took over the roll of mother. Previous to this I had been Fantas father for three months and various other surrogates had come and gone. It took a lot of work to get her used to people, she was too young to survive on her own so I used to feed her every day. Bloody Vitamilk and fruit was all my friend had.
Fanta used to get up with me in the morning run riot for a few hours sleep run riot again and sleep on and off all day. She learnt how to steal ciggies from my pack and sometimes if I was lucky she would give them to me but most of the time she would just tear them up. Even at that young age she had a bad habit of grabbing your bag of dope and running off with it.
Fanta had a friend called Soda who was a Blue tongue dog - one of those big hairy ones. Soda wasn't really Fantas friend though, she got a bit miffed when she was used as mobile hairy tranpsortation around the restaurant. Sometimes I would catch Fanta in Sodas mouth which was always a worry.
When I returned to Ko Chang a year later for two months I went to my friends restaurant and huts happily Fanta was still there, even better within a day she had remember me. Now she would let herself out in the morning and come and wake me up at my hut. We spent hours with together. My friend from England was over staying with me and he was amazed at her.
I picked up a lady on the island but she didn't last long as Fanta was jealous and wouldn't let her near me. Good girl.
THe only bad experience I had with Fanta was when she ate a big bit of dope that she swiped from somebodies bag- she had a bit of a bad trip and tried to attack my friend. But I came to the rescue and spent 4 hours with a monkey who stuffed a whole mango into her mouth before falling off the bed and rolling around the floor - once she got over the inital fright of the weed she just fucked about for hours.
I felt guilty as hell and angry with the person who's weed she had nicked but it was all ok.
I left again to return six months later to find out that some farangs had been and taken her out somewhere where she had eaten or been given something which killed her.
I cried when I heard that.

She only needed the chain when there was a lot of people around and she got a bit excited. She had a habit of icking peoples sunglasses which wasn't to popular.
My last day on the island with her I got up at 5 am to leave to hear the noise of her outside the door earlier than normal. She must have known I was leaving.
I went for a shit and shower in the communual toilet area where she followed me in and spent 15 happy minutes swimming around in the water trough before finally having a piss into it off the edge.
A cheeky little monkey.

You have never lived until you have caned a bag of weed before 12pm and played all morning with a monkey.
Not impressed with Koh Chang one bit. Overpriced and dead by 11pm. Crap food. Nice resort hotels but expensive for the longer stay.
I'd park your arse in Pattaya mate...
I had one of those monkeys for a few years, it destroyed everything it could get hold of, I used to take it to the temple and let it off it's lead to climb the trees, a lot of the time it wouldn't come back when I called it so I had to start the motorbike up, then it would panic thinking I was going to leave her there and come chasing me and jump onto the bike.

I love koh chang too... beautiful island - though not the main beach which is overdeveloped; but if you want excitement maybe you are better going somewhere else. It is a place to relax (v romantic) not to party
