Kop Khun Khrap - I hate saying it!

For a word which is used with quite possibly more frequency than any other word in the Thai language - whose bright idea was it to make it three syllables and about as free flowing as somebody with a stammer attempting a tounge twister.

No wonder most Thai's and experienced speakers cut out the first two but why have the first two in the first place? 'Khrap' kind of says the same thing anyway.

If a Thai doesn't understand 'Thankyou' then a subtle bow of the head says it all - which reminds me, I also struggle with 'Howakalog' which is the Thai word for 'skull'.

What a daft un-sexy language it is. :)

I just say Khrap.

I'm sure most of us do, that doesn't change the fact that we say Khrap' because the full version is daft and impractical.

...and "Thankyou" is so remarkably easy for Thais to say.

is it really that difficult for you to say a 3 syllable phrase?

"Good afternoon" is 4 syllables long and I know 3 year old Thais that hit it with a smile on their face.

But if you just say "khrap" how does the person you're speaking to know you're saying "thank you". Actually you're just acknowledging the last thing that's been said.

I have the same problem with this phrase as I do with the Wai gesture.

You don't wai the girl at the checkout in Lotus after she's given you your change. I usually say "kawp khun maak' to someone in a shop. In the perhaps mistaken belief that as a customer I am a big shot and shouldn't have to say "krap".

tiresome, its actually a great language to listen to, fast and free flowing. i really miss the sound of thai females chattering, in fact they are almost singing.

It's a nicer language than tagalog, and I have to admit I like nothing more than introducing two Thai's who I know but don't know each other and listening to the endless Ka's and Khraps, and I am not complaining, though I guess it looks like I was - I had a better nights sleep last night.

My point was really that it a word which is so ubiquitous is usually something that rolls off the tounge easily.

'Molecular' is four syllables and would be difficult for a Thai to say but not because it is four syllables, but once somebody unfamiliar with the word actually knew how to pronounce it, it flows off the tounge easier than Kop-Khun-Krap which is more like a Skoda kangarooing at Ruddian traffic lights than warm treacle being poured over a block of butter.

By now you're probably wondering what the fuck I am talking about, ok - a 3 syllable Thai word which is piss easy to say and has a nice easy flow to it is Waddie Crap, yeah so what I spelled it wrong, what are we Ajarn now?!

I think that there should be a common sense law that bans some people from leaving their hometown...:rofl:

Just do what the British do best , refuse to attempt to speak any other language other than English , Go any where in the world and expect every one to fully understand us and give fluent replies in our native tounge !!!!!! Simple in it ?
